Fernandina Beach is a small, unincorporated community located in Monroe County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,689 at the 2000 census. Fernandina Beach is located on the Gulf of Mexico just south of the Louisiana state line. The name Fernandina comes from Spanish meaning "Island of Fernandina". The earliest mention of Fernandina beach was in 1857 when Captain Alfred Vail wrote about a small island called Fernandina which he had seen while exploring the Gulf of Mexico. In 1898,during the American Revolution, Major General James Wilkinson made an encampment on what is now known as Frenchman's Island and named it after his friend and mentor Admiral Pierre-Joseph Marquette. On July 4th, 1945, during World War II United States forces landed on Fairey boats along with other ships to capture airfield #2 (now known as Jacksonville International Airport) in Fernandina Beach and Naval Air Station NAS Pensacola east of town.The area now referred to as Fenton Park was once part of this airfield where many people lived and worked such as airplane makers Boeing Aviation Company and Curtiss-Wright Aircraft Corporation. Many local businesses were established during this time including The PX Café which still stands today across from Walmart just off US1A north of town. With so many businesses clustering around those two airports it is no wonder that there are few landmarks remaining from those days except for one old post office building which still stands next to Patton Boulevard north of town. This quickly changed when NAS Pensacola closed its doors in 1957 leaving much land undeveloped for housing developments – until recently that same land served as home to several large aluminum plants operated by Alcoa Aluminum Company before being abandoned again due to environmental concerns about lead acid battery production operations on that property today adjacent to Interstate 95 between Jacksonville and Fort Myers FL There have been efforts over recent years by some residents who live within sight or sound of these heavy manufacturing sites (albeit with little success) to revive interest in developing this once vibrant portion of town; however these efforts will continue apace regardless given current market conditions

Fernandina Beach was established on November 10, 1887 by J.S. Beal and A.T. King. The town was named for Fernandina, the daughter of the original settler John Stratton. The Stratton heirs donated land to the town in 1892, and it became a part of Miami-Dade County on December 6, 1896. On May 1, 1926, Fernandina Beach incorporated as a village under the name of "Fernanda". The population had grown to over 2,500 by 1937 when they abandoned their village status and adopted their present name. The history of Fernandina Beach is one that reflects its founders’intentions: To make a community where people could enjoy natural resources and live close to each other in an environment that would promote social interaction and economic prosperity. Fernandina Beach was founded in 1892 by Seeger, who named it for his daughter, Fernandina. The first post office was established at Fernandina in 1896. In 1907, the name of the town was changed to Fernandina Beach because of its proximity to Jacksonville. The first school buildings were built in 1908 and 1909. In 1912, a hotel/motel was built on what is now State Road 1 across from the beach. The town's first grocery store opened in 1914. The first hospitals were established in 1916 and 1922 respectively. A parade ground and pool were also constructed during this time period. In 1928, a movie theater was built on Main Street which functioned until 1966 when it burned down. In 1945, an airfield was established off of State Road 1 which served as training grounds for the Florida Air National Guard until 1971 when it closed down due to budget cuts. After the closure of the airfield, Fernandina Beach developed into a popular tourist attraction with many bars and restaurants opening up over the years including several that remain today such as Lobster Shack & Lobster rolls fame (now known as Joe's Seafood). The high water mark for tourism occurred during Hurricane Ivan in1998 when more than $100 million worth of damage was inflicted on nearby communities along state road 1 making Fernandina Beach one of Florida's most severely impacted areas . Over $30 million had been invested by local businesses and residents to rebuild after Ivan destroyed entire neighborhoods infrastructure disrupting economy
