In 1924, General Lewis Biddle, who served as Commanding General of USArmy Southwest Asia Command from 1945-1948, gifted three acres of land near Camp Blanding to the people of Florida City for use as an Army hospital/ barracks complex known as “Baldwin Field Hospital” after then-Governor Al Sadr and Rear Admiral Halsey Baldwin (headquarters commander US Naval Forces Central Gulf) who were both patients there during World War II. The facility went operational on 25 October 1948 under command of Major General Sam Acheson with Lieutenant Colonel Archibald Forbes serving as commanding officer from 1949-1950s; Brigadier General Edwin Crouch from 1951-1955; Colonel Wernher von Braun from 1956-1959;MajorGeneral Norman Schwarzkopf from 1960-1963; and LieutenantGeneral Creighton Abrams from 1965-1968 which lasted until 1974 when it became part of Fort Brooke Medical Center under Military Police Commander David Lummis with Major General Jocko Willingham commanding officers until 1978 when it reverted back to its original name “Baldwin Field Hospital” once again under Military Police Commander David Lummis until 1979 when it reverted back to its original name once again under Military Intelligence Commander Seymour MERSHEY Jr.. Florida City lost its garrison unit on 15 June 1969 due to budget cuts within the Defense Department but regained their unit six months later upon establishment of Headquarters Battalion (1st Battalion) Task Force Palm Beach County which relocated permanentlyto Building 3A Barracks Complex located at 210 S Green Street on 18 September 1970 while concurrently HQ Troop Company (3rd Squadron), 4th Squadron moved location Exact Location Unknown commandos began operations c1991 however no longer active since 27 Sep 1991 following changeover From Infantry To Armor !!!!! The Florida City Army Post Office was opened in 1907. In 1944, the post office was closed due to World War II. It reopened in 1945 as the barracks for the 1st Infantry Division of the United States Army. The post office closed again in 1957. The army moved out of the barracks and converted it into a public school in 1961. In 1992, whenSeminole County was formed, part of it became Florida City and part of it became Tampa. The old post office building was finally demolished in 1994 and its land used for a park.
Florida City is a city in Monroe County, Florida, United States. The population was 3,362 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. The name "Florida City" was given to the town by William Fenton Hall in 1898 as an allusion to Fort Myers, which had been named after Spain's Florida colony of Santa Fé. The first settlement in what is now Florida City was established on October 2, 1835 by John Sibley and his family from Massachusetts. They built a log cabin on the banks of canals that run through present-day downtown Jacksonville. In 1837, Jens Jensen founded a sawmill and gristmill on said canals and began producing lumber for shipment to nearby fortifications such as Fort Fisher and Jacksonville Landing. In 1841 Mormon soldiers burned down Sibley's cabin but he rebuilt it using logs from his new mill. In 1865 James Kellar became one of the first white men to reside in Florida City when he moved from Stonington, Connecticut with his wife Anna into a three-room cottage near the mouth of Canals 1 & 2 for $5 per week; their children were born there also during this time frame: Nora (1865), James W., Jr.(1867), Harry (1869), Lynn (1871). Kellar later built many other homes in Florida City before selling them off beginning around 1880s while still living there himself; some survive today as relic properties or tourist destinations in downtown Jacksonville. The town proper only came into being when two railroads intersected near its current location: The Atlantic Coast Line Railroad east across Canals 1 & 2 on January 14th, 1886 and soon afterward The Municipal Railway Company west across Canal Street onto land that would become northwest corner of Third Street/Downtown Boulevard south side thence becoming northeast corner of First Streets southeast corner along Russell Avenue Bridge over Mobile Bay whence remaining block northeast corner Fourth Streets west side thence becoming southwest corner Third Streets thence becoming southeast corner Second Streets then southwestern corner First Streets forming its present boundaries including most likely where Downtown Boulevard currently meets Russell Avenue Bridge
