In 1807, Portuguese explorer Pedro Rodrigues sailed into the western Indian Ocean and found a group of islands off the coast of India called Java. He named these islands after his hometown of Portugal: Java (the island). When Rodrigues explored this new land he discovered coffee was growing on these islands! The Dutch founded a colony on Java in 1625, but they didn't develop coffee very much because it was too expensive to transport overland. In 1795, King George II of England granted an exclusive right to Dutch West India Company merchants to trade with Indonesia. These merchants developed coffee beans into what we know today as Indonesian coffee. By 1824, all Dutch colonies had been dissolved, so English capitalists started trading with Indonesia again. Florida City was founded in 1821 by Captain James Cook as the first permanent European settlement on the Florida Peninsula. The town grew quickly, thanks to its location on a bend in the St. Johns River and its access to timber and water resources.
