In the early 1800s, Florida City was a small town in central Florida. It was known for its citrus fruit production and for being the home of President James K. Polk in 1844. The town changed hands several times before it became part of Jacksonville, Florida, in 1912. In the 1920s and 1930s, Florida City experienced significant expansion due to its status as a commercial center for the region. This group came from Spanish speaking regions throughout South America; some were direct descendants of those who had journeyed there centuries earlier including Andrés Fernández de la Cueva y Valdivia who settled at Santiago de Cuba just east of today’s Brickell Avenue/Miami Drive NE corner after sailing down Cape Hatteras Bay on his “Ponce de Leon” Expedition in 1513 seeking refuge from Moorish invaders During this time period there were also waves of Irish Catholics fleeing religious persecution back home who started arriving here beginning around 1840 as sugarcane growers looking for independence from Spain However these newcomers did not initially settle within our current boundaries but instead established themselves along Biscayne Boulevard/BIG RIDGE Road corridor within today’s Coral Gables neighborhood These areas later became known as SW 6th Street Corridor because they lay smack dab between then Coconut Grove neighborhoods northwestward along Flagler Street edged by Broward Transitway (now Northwest Expressway) which ran concurrently at that time approximately paralleling Flagler until trends shifted about 1900 routing Traffic onto Okeechobee River properties near Fort Myers Today much like today's Neighborhood names refer more specifically geographically rather than historically or contemporaneously

Florida City was founded in 1835 by James D. Polk as a trading post on the Florida Keys. In 1861, during the American Civil War, Florida City was sacked by Confederate forces under General Robert E. Lee. The town fell to the Union cause two years later, but continued to be burned down and looted until 1865 when it finally surrendered unconditionally to Union forces. After the war, Florida City experienced a period of rapid growth and development that lasted for several decades. By 1907 it had acquired an impressive library system with more than 500 volumes, as well as a hospital and jail. In 1912 Miami Beach became established as its new sister city, and in 1925 Florida City merged with Miami Beach County to form the present-day county of Miami-Dade. Florida City is the county seat of Miami-Dade County, Florida. It was founded as a small village in 1837 by early Spanish settlers on the east coast of what is now Miami-Dade County. The first permanent European settlers in Florida were Englishman John Callahan and his wife Sara Key, who arrived in 1765. In 1837, Floridians voted to rename their town after President James K. Polk for his actions during the Mexican–American War that year. Polk had been elected to office just two months earlier and was already making decisions about American policy at the time he named Flaosta City. In 1849, Flaosta City became a city with its own government and mayoralty under the name of "Miami". In 1900, it became part of Miami-Dade County when it was created from parts of South Dade and Broward Counties. In 2003, it merged with neighbouring Kendall into one municipality called "Florida City" which still holds its own government today.
