In 1834, the Seminole Nation ceded their land to the United States following a series of wars between them and Spain. The US built Fort Brooke on what is now downtown Tampa and began trading with the Seminoles. Florida City was formally incorporated as a city on March 3, 1904. It became an important port for Sooners shipping goods from east Texas to central Florida during World War I. After the war, development increased around downtown as easier access to Interstate 95 led to more businesses opening up there. During this time, also came growth in professional sports teams including the Buccaneers (1948-present), Panthers (1989-1998), Rays (2003-present) and Dolphins (1981-1998). Florida City has seen various types of redevelopment over its history - from residential areas such as Forest Hills and Plantation Hills to commercial districts such as Central Square and Lowry Park Circle - but it always remains an important cultural center for the region.
