Florida City is a city in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,821 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami–Fort Lauderdale–Miami Beach metropolitan area. The site of what is now Florida City was first inhabited by the Timucua tribe in 1672 and then by Seminoles. In 1836, Florida City became part of Spanish Fort, which served as an outpost on the southern tip of Cuba during the Seminole Wars. In 1845, the U.S. Army built Fort Godfrey on present-day Biscayne Bay to protect Havana from Confederate attack while American forces fought for control over Cuba. In 1861, after Cuban independence was granted and Ft Godfrey fell into civilian hands, soldiers burned it down to prevent its use as a barracks by British forces occupying Cuba until 1898; this event is also known as "the Burning of Ft Godfrey". After Spanish Fort's burning, settlers arrived from South America looking for land to settle and founded what is today Miami proper on bluffs overlooking Biscayne Bay in 1847. They named their new community after José Miguel de la Concha y Salazar (1783-1861), governor of Santiago de Cuba at that time and founder of Cuban colonization in North America; de la Concha had come ashore from Puerto Rico with his brother Don José María Menéndez y Cano to establish a sugar plantation there in 1824). In 1948, they changed their name back to Roastery de la Caza after merging with another Mexican coffee company, el Azteca Coffee Company. In 1978, they sold their business to Jugend Koffee GmbH & Co., which continues to operate today as Roastery de la Caza S.A.R.L.. At present, Roastery de la Caza produces over 100 different types of beans worldwide under three different brand names: Acrobatics (French), El Azteca (Mexican), and Jugend Koffee GmbH & Co.'s own branded beans (Dutch).
As one of the oldest communities in Florida, Florida City has a rich history that dates back to 1868. The community was founded by Captain Edward H. Hebard and his wife, Anna Maria Murdock Hebard, on the site of what is now known as Hebard's Landing. The first permanent settler in Florida City was John Fenton, who arrived in 1868. At the time, it was a small town with just over 100 residents. In 1870, Jacksonville moved into Florida City and quickly became its commercial and social center. Florida City experienced another heyday during the 1920s and 1930s when itboomed as a resort town due to its ample water supply and beautiful surroundings. However, since World War II has had a significant impact on its economy; tourism has become the primary focus of FLCity's future development. Today, there are nearly 1,500 residents living in FLCity and it continues to be an important cultural and economic center for northwest Florida.
Florida City was founded on December 8, 1839, by Captain John F. Worth and his wife, named Sarah. The town was developed on the site of an old trading post that had been abandoned for years. The city was originally named Jacksonville but was changed to Florida City because of its proximity to the state of Florida. In 1861, Confederate General Braxton Bragg unsuccessfully attempted to siege Florida City with 140 cannons and 5,000 men after learning that it would be a major supply depot for Union forces in the area. In 1865, during the American Civil War, General Robert Ewell's Confederate army besieged and captured Florida City while under cover of darkness. The capture demonstrated Confederates' ability to Fortify their capital city even when they were surrounded by Union forces. After the war ended, Florida City reverted back to Jacksonville's control and remained so until 1963 when it became part of Miami-Dade County.
