In 1821, Spanish settlers founded Florida City on the east coast of Tampa Bay. The area was originally called Ybor City after Juan Bautista de Ybor, a governor of Cuba who fled to Tampa in 1795 during the Spanish Inquisition. In 1836, following Indian removal policies of U.S. President Andrew Jackson, Florida City became part of Jacksonville and its boundaries were redefined in 1839 as part of a land grant to James Allston. Florida City experienced significant growth from the early 1800s until it was destroyed by fire in 1904. After the fire, some residents moved back into the city while others decided to move away because of its difficult living conditions and lack of infrastructure. By 1915, only a few hundred people remained in Florida City and most businesses had closed or relocated out of town. The city’s decline began with World War II when many jobs left for military installations in nearby Tampa Bay. The population decreased further after the war as newcomers increasingly chose to live closer to family or friends instead of returning home to see their homes burned down or looted during wartime occupation efforts. Development proposals for Florida City again reached fruition starting in the late 1990s but never got off the ground because funding was not available from either local or federal government agencies at that time. In recent years, there have been several attempts by developers to bring development back to Florida City through various means such as constructing new streets and sidewalks, developing new waterfront property adjacent to state-owned Lake Okeechobee Correctional Facility, increasing use of public transportation within walking distance (such as MARTA), or creating an enclosed park/town square adjacent to Interstate 441 that could be used for events such as music concerts or commercial exhibitions. However, no comprehensive plan has yet been released which would create enough jobs and generate necessary tax revenue for redevelopment purposes over multiple decades. Despite these numerous efforts over the past decade+, little progress has been made towards reopening Florida City as an active community again despite initial expectations from local officials and citizens alike
In 1868, the area that is now Florida City was part of what was then the Seminole Nation. The Seminoles were forced out of their land in 1861 by Confederate forces. In 1865, the United States acquired Florida from Spain and established it as a territory. The town of Florida City was founded in 1868 by George Washington Cullum and James Wertheimer as a sleepy trading post on the banks of the Kissimmee River. By 1870, the town had become an important center for shipping goods across the St. Johns River to Jacksonville and other nearby cities. In 1888,Florida City became one of four planned towns within Tampa Bay Area when Tampa became a county seat. The Turnpike was built through Florida City in 1892 and became one of American history’s most significant infrastructure projects. After years of development, including much construction activity around downtown Florida City, growth began to slow in the early 21st century as traffic shifted away from regional transportation hubs such as Tampa Bay Area Regional Airport and Hillsborough County Regional Transit District to more downtown-oriented destinations such as Busch Gardens or SeaWorld Park. However, new development continues to thrive around Florida City along I-4 and US-1 with several high-end hotels being constructed over recent years near Downtown Jacksonville's smartaley district (the former downtown core).
