Morton donated a cannon to the National Guard for use as part of their artillery regiment. The cannon became known as "Morton's Cannon" after its donation and served in that regiment until 1865. On December 15, 1888, a large quantities of gifts were given to members of the city's seaman militia during Christmas season. Florida City is a city in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. It was founded by Spanish colonists in the late 16th century as Pembroke Plantation. The city served as the capital of Miami-Dade County from 1819 to 1827 and again from 1886 to 1896. As of 2010, its population was estimated at 67,828. The name "Florida City" was given to the settlement by Captain José Acosta after his visit to Key West on December 3, 1795 while exploring the western coast of Florida with Lieutenant James Cook. In 1818, Manuel de la Vega y Costilla chartered a small town called "Ponte Vedra" on the east side of Biscayne Bay for about 800 Spanish settlers and named it for one of his ancestors who had been executed in Spain for supporting American independence. The colony failed due to poor management and disease; only two families remained until 1830 when another group moved in and renamed it "Punta Gorda". In 1827, Governor Isaac Watts ordered all Spanish settlements be closed because he believed that they were supporting Indian independence movements instead of aiding English development along theeast coast of Florida. This caused many locals to flee or be forced out of their homes including Captain José Acosta who decided to stay and continue trading goods with local Indian groups before eventually dying in exile in Havana some years later. When word spread that Watts had died, many people eager to take advantage of new opportunities arrived in what would become known as “the Week Of Shame” due mainly to economic reasons (many Floridians were still struggling through an expensive war). On October 14–16, 1896, approximately 25% of Miami’s total population participated in an event which marks one half century since America gained her independence from Spain – this event was also commemorated annually by Flag Day parade through downtownMiami each year since 1959! Florida City was founded in 1837 by Capt. John Fenton and his wife, Ann. The town was named for the Spanish city of Florida, which had been annexed by Mexico in 1821. Captain Fenton and his family were the first white people to live in Florida City and they built a log cabin on the present site of the First National Bank building. In 1840, Captain Fenton donated land to build what is now State Road 9A. The town's first store opened in 1841 and its first school was built in 1842. By 1850, Florida City had a population of around 100 people. In 1865, Captain Fenton donated land to establish Seminole County as well as create a courthouse square that still exists today. In 1899, Florida City became part of Miami-Dade County when it was organized from parts of Broward County. It remained an incorporated municipality until 1967 when it became part of Miami-Dade County's unincorporated area known as "The Beach". As part of this change, all municipal services were transferred from Florida City to Miami-Dade County except for water supply and waste management which remain with the city today.
