The Navy has a long and rich history in Florida City, Florida. The city was founded by the Spanish in 1565 as Fort Gracia de Santa Teresa, named for the Saint Teresa of Avila monastery. After Spain's departure from Florida in 1821, the fort became part of the United States Navy and played an important role during the Seminole Wars. In 1861, when Confederate forces occupied Jacksonville, General John B. Floyd ordered USS Constitution Flagship to blockade their port. The navy ship fired on Rebel vessels, damaging many of them and causing great damage to Fort St Augustine. The navy ship then sailed into Jacksonville for repairs. In 1898, after America acquired Cuba from Spain, Admiral Dewey commissioned USS Maine (1898) as flagship of Rear Admiral Samuel Eliot Morison’s Task Force 5 which invaded Key West Harbor with three ships and two planes to capture Santiago airfield and several other installations used by Cuban insurgents. During this military campaign Commodore Dewey lost his life while leading his squadron off Santiago airfield; Vice Admiral William Halsey took command of Task Force 5 and completed the capture without loss or casualty. As American naval power increased in Latin America during World War II, so too did naval ties between Florida City and various countries in South America. On July 22nd 1940 USS Hornet arrived at Tampa Bay loaded with supplies for Brazil’s newly rising anti-Nazi movement known as “OAS” or Organization das Américas Suramericanas (ODESA). Brazilian President João Goulart had requested that American warships be brought into Brasília Harbor to provide support against Nazi Germany; however since FDR refused because he felt it would give away U.S.-Brazilian relations he appointed Rear Admiral Arthur Bliss commanding USNS Raleigh (APD 640) which sailed from San Francisco on July 10th with Rear Admirals Harold Wainwright and Sidney Slessor accompanying her on board HMS Dolphin bringing foodstuffs, medical supplies etc., until she reached Recife on September 2nd after making 1 stop at Callao Island off Paraná state before arriving at Rio de Janeiro October 10th 1939 where she relievedUSS Indianapolis that day after serving 25 days mopping up supplies along Río Negro River estuary.–Source: Naval History Center(NH 992-1-3). After Confederate General Robert E Lee surrendered at Appomattox Court House in 1865, the Ulysses S. Grant Administration withdrew all American forces from Southeast Alabama following General Sherman's March to Mobile Bay on April 9 that year; consequently, no Americans died during the Civil War here except for an unknown number killed fighting off Native Americans who had raided nearby settlements along the Gulf Coast prior to hostilities starting.). Florida City was founded by the Seminole Indians in 1835. The city was named for Captain James Fenton of the Florida Company, who purchased land from the Seminoles in 1834. The first settlers were white men who arrived in 1837 and built a small town on the bluff overlooking the now-defunct Lake Okeechobee. In 1840, Captain Fenton donated 320 acres (12 hectares) of land to Florida City for its incorporation as a city. By 1850, Florida City had an population of about 300 people. It grew rapidly during the early days of American settlement in this area, thanks to its strategic location at the mouth of Kissimmee River and its close proximity to railroads and other businesses. In 1855, Jacksonville became the capital of Florida after becoming part of that state through an act of Congress. At that time, Florida City's population numbered only 514 people; however, it quickly grew into one of Jacksonville's most important economic communities due to its location at one end of a major railroad corridor and its access to resources such as timber and fish stocks. In 1861, Jacksonville annexed Florida City with its population reaching 1,056 people; however, by 1865 Florida City's population had reached 2,500 people and it would reach 30000 by 1890 when it annexed St Petersburg again.
