The Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood, Florida Air Force Base is home to the Fifth Generation Fighter Wing (FGW), one of the most powerful fighter wings in the United States Air Force. The FGW has a rich history dating back to World War II. The base was activated on 1 October 1942 as Second Air Force's Fourth Combat Depot (CDP) at Hollywood Airport. It was renamed Eighth Air Force's Tenth Training Station on 25 November 1945 and activated as an operational airfield under Third Air Forces on 18 January 1946. Fort Lauderdale, Florida is an American city located on the Gulf of Mexico in southern Florida. The population was 1,709,645 at the 2010 census and is estimated to be 2,028,362 by 2019. It is one of the most populous cities in both Florida and America. The area that now makes up Fort Lauderdale was first inhabited by Native Americans. In 1565, Spanish colonists arrived and founded a military settlement called Santiago de Cuba on what is now Northeast 25th Street near SW 7th Avenue. The town changed its name to Fort Lauderdale after Major José María Fort Lauderdale y Menendez, a lieutenant colonel in the Spanish Army who served in Cuba during the 1795-1801 war with France. In 1846, fortifications were built at this location to protect Tampa from attack by Seminole Indians led by Chief Osceola. The town became a US military post designating it as Presidio de la Bahia de La Villa (Presidio of Broward). On July 26, 1853 Miami Beach was added toFort Lauderdale County effective November 16th of that year when all land west of I-4 was annexed into Miami County for annexation purposes only – not for development or urban growth like today’s municipalities did which began on April 4th with much outcry from residents east of I-4 who felt they had been forgotten about! On October 6th 1908 Mayor James Meeks approved plans for the creation of a large parkland north of downtown between Northwest First Avenue and Northwest Second Avenue bounded along Northwest First Avenue by NW 5th Street (now Biscayne Boulevard), Northwest Second Avenue NE (thenNW 29th Street), Nw 3rd Street (now NW 30TH street), Southwest Third avenue southwest corner lot/northwest corner lot/southwest corner lot immediately adjoining Northeast Fourth Ave NE; southwest corner lot/northwest corner lot immediately adjoining Southeast Eighth Ave NE; northwest corner lot/northwest corner lot adjacent east side of Kendall Bayou; northeast corner lots easterly boundary line between Broward County and Palm Beach County lines thereby creating Cutler Bay Park which included Robinson's Island within its boundaries and also including Everglades National Park adjacent thereto
