The Fort Lauderdale Coast Guard has been a part of the city’s life for over 100 years. The first Coast Guard station was established in 1887, and by 1912 the fort had become a base for the service. Today, the Coast Guard provides law enforcement and emergency services to Broward County, as well as providing education and training to local citizens. In addition to its presence on Broward County beaches, the Coast Guard also maintains a marine unit at Port Everglades.
