The first Europeans to visit what is now Fort Lauderdale were Spanish traders in 1513 who named it San Miguel de Allende after their leader Alonso de Montoya y Arellano landed there on July 24th that year with 150 men from Hispaniola under his command. British traders also visited the area in 1565 followed by French colonists in 1610 and again in 1663 when Jean-Baptiste Colbert became Governor of Florida Bay. In 1821, Congress chose Miami as the capital for Floridas new state but never ratified its constitution which left Fort Lauderdale (then part of Monroe County) without an official name until November 8th 1892 when commissioners agreed upon "South FtLauderdale" as its official name; this name lasted until May 10th 1907 when it was changed back to "South Fort Lauderdale" effective October 13th 1907 because of local opposition over a proposed merger with nearby Jacksonville which they felt would have made their city too large and competitively powerful within Broward County while Jacksonville would have been allowed to annex portions of neighboring Duval County making it twice as large as Fort Lauderdale proper while still maintaining jurisdiction over all other land east of Boca Raton bay - effectively putting Fort Lauderdale outclassed economically by both cities despite having one less county seat. In 1905 Mayor John Ahern recommended moving the City Hall from downtown to Palm Beach due to growing competition from Jacksonville and pressure from other municipalities seeking annexation into Broward County – which never happened however Ahern's successor JF Kenedy pushed for site selection for a new City Hall rather than continuing to resist annexation efforts altogether leading eventually to construction starting in 1935 with completion scheduled for 1941; this building served as the city hall until 1992 when it was replaced by present day City Hall #1 which houses Administration/artments such as Planning/Zoning & Finance while also serving primarily as a performing arts center comprising 2 theaters, 1 concert hall concert series complex & numerous exhibition spaces including an outdoor amphitheater capable seats up to 100,000+. After World War II growth resumed thanks largely to development around Port Everglades Naval Air Station (later known as Joint Base Hollywood-Port Everglades) along with international migration following wars in Korea & Vietnam plus increased military activity nearsby resulting in ever more sprawling suburban development particularly around Sunrise Boulevard where today's tourist areas are located; this growth came about despite significant zoning restrictions placed on postwar developments limiting land use & housing density along Sunrise Boulevard between SW 156th Street & NW 125th Street remaining essentially undeveloped since 1945 despite occasional attempts at redevelopment through rezoning or townhomes notwithstanding current active plans by developers led by Rick Singermann aimed at reviving Sunrise Boulevard Action Center shopping mall currently being redeveloped into mixeduse housing developments consisting mostly singlefamily homes although some planned highrise apartment buildings will be built atop existing shopping malls should approval be granted variously pending property values generally increasing rapidly adjacent northwest waterfront park featuring beaches bordered by several blocks long narrow creek feeding via underground water tunnels directly fed via surface waterways extending northeast past Gulfport Harbor becoming continuous open Gulf River shoreline subject only intermittentlyto tidal waves averaging ebb & flow reaching +14 feet prior recently occurring destructive storm surge +14 feet several times per week average recent maximum height = +27 feet

Fort Lauderdale, Florida was founded on August 29, 1795 by the Spanish. The original name for the town was San Marcos de Cuba and it was named after Santiago de Cuba, an island in the Caribbean Sea. The site of Fort Lauderdale was chosen because of its strategic location between Tampa Bay and Miami. Afterward, fortifications were built to protect the town from Indian attacks as well as Confederate raids during the American Civil War. In 1887, Fort Lauderdale became a city and in 1912 it became a state capital. A year later Captain José Bautista Menéndez y Cámpora discovered fresh water supplies at this point making this area one of richest hunting grounds on earth providing game such as deer, bear and pig while also yielding valuable minerals like copper and lead -In 1822 Pedro Menéndez Vidal established a small mission at what is now Sunrise Beach -In 1828 Manuel Fernández purchased 8 hectares (20 acres) of land east of downtown FtLauderdale from José Martínez Ibarra -On October 15th 1828 Father Pacheco organized a group of 14 men led by Gabriel García Márquez to explore bays around FtLauderdale looking for new lands to settle including what is now known as Broward County

The city annexed parts of Miami Beach in 1926 and then added land from South Florida to its east side. In 1970, Fort Lauderdale became an organized municipality with its own government and Mayor-Council system. The city has since undergone numerous name changes, most notably to Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL) in 2018 after being merged with Hollywood Studios Inc.
