The city of Fort Lauderdale was founded in 1892 when General W.H. Hardee, the first military governor of the Florida Territory, ordered Captain James A. Cook to explore the area that would later become Fort Lauderdale. Cook's exploration led to the creation of a fortification on what is now Old Broward Boulevard and he named itBroward County post office in honor of his patron saint, St. Brendan. The first residents of Fort Lauderdale were Spanish settlers who arrived in 1894 from Havana and Eleuterio Garcia leased land near what is now Worth Avenue for $2 per year. By 1907,Fort Lauderdale had a population of about 60 people and by 1914 it numbered over 1,000 people due to growth spurred by its location on the Atlantic coast between two major American ports – Miami and Jacksonville – as well as its status as an important military post on both coasts during World War I (1914-18). During World War II (1939-1945), Fort Lauderdale became one of several American cities bombed by Nazi Germany during World War II because its naval base at Port Everglades allowed Allied forces to operate outlying bases within range of German submarines while they engaged in other operations along the East Coast. The bombing raids also caused significant damage to infrastructure such as roads and bridges throughout town which was compounded by years of mismanagement by local officials after the war ended. In 1946, following passage of legislation authorizing elected officials to provide services such as streetlights and public works not funded through state appropriations, Mayor Johnnie Cochran appointed a city manager with responsibility for those services instead of relying solely on government funds. On July 1, 1948Fort Lauderdale became one of only 10 U.S.-based cities that received full City Manager form control over all municipal affairs from then until 1978 when this authority was transferred back to the City Council under new management structure known as “ Municipal Services Authority” or MSA In 1998, MSA merged with Broward County Commissioners Office creating countywide services including pensions for sheriff’s deputies; building permits; trash collections; water rates; library books/directions/cardinals/etc.; property taxes; road improvements including resurfacing streets etc.; fire ratings for certain areas Municipal Services Authority renamed itself Broward County Government Services Administration effective June 30th 2006
