The Fort Lauderdale Naval Base is home to the Navy's Sixth Fleet, which supports Operation Neptune's Spear, the campaign in Afghanistan. The base and its surrounding community have been host to a wide variety of gifts and decorations from the navy over time. Some of these items are still seen on display today at the Naval Station Ft. Lauderdale. The first installation at Ft. Lauderdale was a training facility for sailors called Harbor View Training Center, which was built in 1892 by Rear Admiral James K. Polk III as part of the preparations for World War I. It served as an important headquarters for naval operations in Southern Florida until it closed in 1954 after being destroyed by Hurricane Norma. In 1907, Commander Ernest Jappen commissioned USS "Tarpon" (AO-4) into service as one of four destroyers that would form Flag Officer Commanding Thirdawe Division (FOC-3D), responsible for coastal defense along the southeastern coast of Florida during World War I. The ship remained docked at Ft. Lauderdale until 1917 when she moved to Key West where she served as flagship for Commander Task Force Eighteenth Army Group before returning to Jacksonville in 1919 drifting ashore due to bad weather while under tow behind USS "Preble". She arrived back at Miami on October 3rd and decommissioned there on November 17th before serving with Naval Squadron 2 during World War II under Captain Dudley Loyd commanding Destroyer Squadron One (DESRON ONE). DESRON ONE conducted antisubmarine warfare patrols off Cuba while also providing cover fire for advancing Marines ashore during Operation Neptune's Spear against Vichy French forces located within St.-Lô Bay on December 8th 1941 while USS "Wasp" patrolled off shore providing air support; this action helped contribute significantly to Allied victory over France that day. USS "Wasp" departed Cuban waters on January 3rd 1942 and arrived at Miami about two weeks later; thenceforth she operated out of Key West conducting combat patrol duties off Guantanamo Bay until September 1943 when she sailed from Key West escorting convoy HX 134 northwestward via Spanish Caribbean Sea en route to Casablanca following Ulysses S Grant's successful conquest of Morocco; this event signaled the end of World War II andmarked the beginning of what would become known as American involvement in Central America throughOperation Cartagena which began five days later when USS "Wasp" reached Casablanca Harbor laden with foodstuffs and war materiel destined for Chiriqui Province, Panama; relieved by destroyer escort HMS Euripus early October 1944 after delivering supplies free from Peruvian airspace consistent with Roosevelt administration policy favoring free white people living among Indians rather than assisting indigenous groups resisting Japanese occupation).
