The history of the navy in Fort Lauderdale, Florida goes back to 1886 when a group of investors pooled their money and bought land on Boca Raton Boulevard to build a naval air station. The first Naval Air Station was opened in December of that year and it served as a training ground for pilots from the United States Navy and American Marine Corps. In 1933, Fort Lauderdale was selected as the location for the centerpiece of World War II’s largest naval complex. Thebuildings which would become known as NAS Jacksonville were constructed at this time and they filled an important role in defending Florida against Japanese forces during World War II. During the Cold War, NAS Jacksonville played an important role in providing nuclear-capable planes and helicopters to both NATO member states and partner nations around the world. In 1992, NAS Jacksonville was closed down by then-President George H.W. Bush due to budget cuts but it reopened under new management two years later. It has since been used as a storage facility for various government agencies including law enforcement, firefighting, maritime affairs,and humanitarian assistance missions. Today, NAS Jacksonville is once again home to America’s newest navy installation with over 350 military personnel working at three main bases: base camp on Pinecrest Key; Miramar Annex on 40 acres north of downtown; and Little Creek Annex just east of State Road 705 near Belle Glade. These installations are responsible for conducting operations across multiple oceans from shore to shore while also providing essential accesseto key waterways such as the Atlantic Ocean and Gulf Stream
