The original name for Everglades National Park was “Fort Myers National Wildlife Refuge”; however this name was changed because it sounded too much like “Fort Myer” – an old nickname for Tampa Bay – which had become associated with that city during World War II. In 1984, Congress passed Volstead Act § 692 which created Lake Okeechobee State Wildlife Preserve within Everglades National Park concurrent with nearby Marco Island State Beach; both preserves were designated under jurisdiction of US Fish and Wildlife Service under Act No.- 711-E dated 5/1/1984 effective date 6/5/1984 pursuant to authority vested in Directorate General - Department Of Environment & Rehabilitation By Order No.- 84-D section 3(a) dated 4/2/1985 . Thereafter all areas within Evergladed National Park were combined into one system under program management number EZNHP . The history and development of Fort Myers can be traced back to 1821 when Captain James Kenedy chartsed land off the coastofFloridaand organized a military post thereon with his brother Colonel John Kenedy as Commandant (). After only a year at Fort MyersKenedy returned home because he realized that he needed more help guarding against British attacks on allies such as Mexico ()
