The history of the Air Force in Fort Myers, Florida goes back to World War II. The first Air Force Base was established in this city in 1942 as a result of the war effort. The United States Air Force’s first operational unit, the AAF Training Command, was activated here on 1 October 1942 and flew its first mission from Fort Myers Municipal Airport. In 1945, when the Korean War began, the AAF relocated to MacDill AFB and fighter aircraft were brought in for use in that conflict. In 1951, it became clear that airfields outside of Fort Myers would become even more important during the Cold War era; so MacDill AFB was closed and replaced byFort Myers-Ft Myers AB which served as both an operational base and a training center for fighter pilots. After hostilities ended,activated at Ft Myers-Ft Myers AB on 15 September 1957becametheAir Forces Special Operations Command (AFSOC). It has been an active command since day one. Today’s Air Force is made up of more than 31 000 members worldwide with bases throughout North America, Europe and Asia Pacific; they operate more than 450 aircraft including 92 jet fighters and bombers. On 20 July 2015 Vice President Joe Biden announced that USAF had transferred all remaining F-15 Eagle jets from Okinawa to Japan effective 1 August 2015 in order to improve American security posture across East Asia. This move will see Japanese aircraft grounded while US planes fly over their homeland providing deterrence against any potential aggression by China or South Korea

The U.S. Air Force is one of the most diverse, highly militarized militaries in the world, with over 1,000 service members from more than 70 countries. To ensure that all Air Force members have access to Commemorative Coins and Medals (CCMs), several initiatives have been put into place over time to commemorate air force gift recipients. The first such initiative was instituted in 1951 when then-Chief of Staff General Hoyt S Vandenberg established the Air Forces Commemorative Coin Program (AFCP). This program offered honored citizens of the USAF coins and medals for presentation to commanders and other senior military officials during special events or as part of general gifts. The AFCP continued to be operational until 1990. Another initiative initiated in 1951 was the establishment of the Air Forces Medal Museum (AFM). The AFM housed a collection of coins and medals from both original World War II aircraft armament collectors as well as subsequent generations of airmen who had served through various conflicts since then. In 1975, Congress authorized funds to be added to the AFM’s budget in order to establish an permanent wing within Headquarters United States Air Forces (USAAF) devoted exclusively thereto –the History Wing! Today, it is estimated that more than 2 million items spanning more than 50 years are stored at AFB Mather AFB, California’s largest airfield complex and home to two major museums: The Pentagon Museum & Military History Museum adjacent thereto; & The Joint Service Center for Aviation Heritage Management adjacent thereto which houses an extensive library holdings on USAF history dating back to 1947.]] One important aspect governing Air Force gift history is commemorative coinage itself. Fort Myers, Florida is a city in Lee County, Florida, United States. The population was 813 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tampa–St Petersburg–Clearwater Metropolitan Statistical Area. Fort Myers was founded on December 14, 1819 by Colonel James Wilkinson and Major General Pierre Teal as a military post to protect against Seminole attacks from northward. It became an important fur trade center during the early 19th century and developed into a development that included citrus production and shipbuilding. In 1915 Fort Myers became an independent municipality separate from Lee County. The first settler in what is now Fort Myers was Captain David Barron whose house still stands today on Beach Boulevard east of US-1 near mile marker 291A (the original border between Ft Myers and Clearwater). Barron's arrival may have been motivated by fears that the Seminoles would attack American settlements in Florida if they learned Europeans were present. By 1821 there were several European families living in Fort Myers; most notably John Sutter who had arrived two years earlier with his family from Sacramento, California. The first store opened in 1825 when Isaac Norris set up shop along Government Street south of State Road 57 (now Hwy 41). A year later he added a post office which served settlers until 1828 when mail service began to be provided by boat through Pensacola Bayou. At this time it was necessary to cross Pensacola Bayou for shipment because only one Ferry could take passengers across at a time and the trip took about three days so it wasn't practical for many people to come down each week for their supplies and goods needed for their farmsteads back home on Stonington Island off Cape Canaveral Peninsula! In 1830Captain Richard Fenton built a wharf next to where US-1 now meets Gulfstream Drive just offshore from downtown Fort Myers Fenton named it "Indian Harbor" after Chief Osceola who had offered protection against Spanish pirates while cruising near Ft Myers during Mobile Bayou Drifting season! In 1831 another captain named Nicholas Long established himself at Indian Harbor with his family also moving there shortly afterwards including his son Nicholas Jr., who would later become known as “Nicholas Longboat” or simply “Long” due to his longboats used for shipping goods up state waters between Jacksonville Landing (southwest of Tampa) and Charlotte Harbor (northwest of Sarasota) . The northeast side of Indian Harbour then became known as Westshore because much of what is now downtown fort MYERS formed this shoreline about 1800 AD when mangrove forests extended inland some 10 miles swampy area extending all along Intracoastal Waterway becoming more open towards Southeast corner then closed completely by dune backed bayous etc…… After many years residents decided its time name change back To Fortero following visit from Mrs Gertrude Forster RNMC WWII veteran lady who resided adjacent property NW side lot southeastof Intracoastal Waterway ] In1896 Mayor Wm Butler announced intent to rename town after Confederate general Robert E. Lee however prior written surveys indicate no such designation existed withinLee County at that time even though many citizens lived & died here…..After much debate among citizens vote was taken & new name chosen asFort Myer [later changed again ToFort Walton Beach]…………….Today oldest continuouslyOperating Post Office still serving FtMyers residents called Webb Avenue Building…] It wasn't until 1840 when Congress passed legislation authorizing construction of molehills around Miami – little did they know that these hills would become one of America's most valuable naval bases! Construction began immediately on land donated by Judge Samuel Rodriguez y Noriega – considered one of the original pioneers in South Florida! The first hulk ever launched outdid all expectations achieving maximum speed before hitting bottom resulting in many injuries! As word spread about America's newest Naval Base things started happening quickly: steamboats brought cannon fodder (i think we got cannons too!) being lowered off into harbor mouth every day ensuring shipyard operations continued uninterrupted; cotton plantations were born; cattle were herded onto ships; sugarcane plantations started…and so forth!! This activity allowed us 1st white man ashore on South American continent Yupachee Indians lived nearby conducting trade with us w/ Reliable transportation systems their boats could provide BUT didn't help much our cause since they lacked sword skills ] Today visitor Center has free admission weekday 9am-5pm & Saturday 9am-4pm
Fort Myers was founded in 1824 by Captain James M. Kenedy as a military post on the river St. Johns. It was renamed Fort Myers in 1827 after General John Fenton, who had commanded the United States Army during the Mexican-American War. The fort served as a military base for area Native Americans and as a commercial center during the 1840s and 1850s. In 1859, Fort Myers became part of Florida Territory when it was created from Seminole County and parts of Duval County. In 1861, Confederate forces under General Floyd Alexander attacked Fort Myers, which led to the Battle of Fort Myers. After the battle, Florida seceded from the Union and Fort Myers reverted to Spanish control. The fort closed in 1865 and was decommissioned in 1870. It reopened in 1881 as an asylum for female insane patients called "The Women's Asylum". The asylum is now part of Evergreen State College.
