In the early 1900s, Fort Myers was home to one of the most important military installations in Florida. The fort was located on a strategic peninsula that overlooked the St. Petersburg Bay and its connecting waterways. The location made it an ideal site for training and testing troops, as well as providing a staging ground for campaigns against Native Americans and Spanish settlers. The first soldiers to arrive at Fort Myers were local farmers who had volunteered their services in 1892. By 1903, the fort had been manned by infantry, artillery, cavalry, and signal corps personnel. In 1912, the U.S. Army transferred control of Fort Myers to the Department of War and began garrisoning troops here permanent status. The post’s role changed again during World War II when it became known as Camp Swain’s Lake after General George Custer’s unit that served in Europe during that war. From 1942-1945, Fort Myers played a major role in Operation Overlord by providing storage facilities for munitions and other supplies needed by U.S forces fighting Nazi Germany throughout Europe. After the war ended, Camp Swain’s Lake was decommissioned and eventually sold off to private enterprise in 1949-1950 election year for $1 million dollars which went towards creating what is now known as Swain Park State Park across from downtown Ft Myers proper on US-2A just east of I-75/State Road 349E/Broward County line). At this point in time there still remained military occupancy with barracks (now used as transient housing) on Post Rd., across from old Depot Inn restaurant; engine & boiler garage; 2 Machine Gun Platoons (MGs) & 5 Sergeants Quarters; Signal Station (20 FT high concrete building built between 1924-1927); Battery #4 detached Magazines 1935/36; Chaplainage Barracks 1938 (later use: North Shore Hospital 1959-1963); Truck Garage 1939; Supply Store 1941; Aviation Annex 1945-. After years of decline & abandonment due primarily to lack of funds & interest ($2 million budget shortfall), state government purchased active Military Base property adjacent to new park acres from GulfCorp Incorporated effective May 1st 1994 thru Dec 31st 1996 inclusive.$8 million dollars more than budget request! Fort Myers,Florida is a city in Lee County, Florida, United States. The population was 128,829 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fort Myers–Cypress Micropolitan Statistical Area. Fort Myers is located on the Santa Rosa Peninsula and includes parts of south-central Lee County as well as portions of north-central Bay County. The first permanent human settlements in what would become Fort Myers were made by Father José Gomez in 1795 during Spanish colonial rule of Florida. A U.S. military post was established here in 1814 by General James Wilkinson after American victories against Spain at Buena Vista and Lake Presidio. At the time it was one of only two U.S.-held posts in South Florida and one of just a few whole countryside open to American settlement east of Tampa Bay. By 1836, most all US military forces had been pulled out from Florida and Miami moved into this area; Santa Rosa Punta de la Cruz became an important port for goods moving between the Indian Keys (west) and mainland Cuba (east). In 1855, businessman Andrew Wyle bought land on which he built a large plantation called Wyle Bros., now part of Discovery Islands National Park/Fort Myers Beach State Park combo Bianco's Island /Wyle's Key/. In 1860 Henry Holland selected this site for what would be known as "Holland Point", named after him since he had an ownership interest in much or all that would come to form present day Fort Myers In 1865 Union general John Custer's army spent wintering near Mexico City before continuing their march through Texas across New Mexico towards California; when they reached Mexican territory they burned all but five miles (8 km) of road leading from Albuquerque to Mexico City – which destroyed most supplies entering that capital This campaign helped spur rapid development within Mexican City: new roads were built, businesses were opened up, cotton plantations were founded – eventually amounting to over 100 plantations housing some 25 million bales (2 million kg) worth of cotton per year The town began rapidly expanding around Holland Point: streets were laid out and homes began rising along Avenida Central where stores now stand today including HanesBrands headquarters building completed in 1959 As more people started moving into the area – workers at Wyle Bros., Bianco's Island & other properties started leasing land surrounding Holland Point East for use as their own gardens, tennis courts, parks etc.–the name "Fort Myers" slowly began being used locally rather than simply "Holland Point". Fort Myers, Florida is a city in southern Florida. It was founded by Spanish colonists in 1565 and originally named Santiago de Cuba. The city changed its name to Fort Myers after the first U.S. president, James K. Polk, visited it in 1885. The city became a state of the United States on May 6, 1959.
The first European to visit Fort Myers was Captain John Smith in 1565. The area was part of the Spanish colony of Florida and saw sporadic Indian raids until 1763, when a group of British settlers founded the town of Fort Myers on Lake Monroe. In 1796, the United States acquired Florida from Spain as part of the Treaty of Paris following the American Revolution. The US military built a fort at Fort Myers to protect its citizens from attack by French and Spanish forces. On November 9, 1815, Commodore James C. Kenedy induced a local Seminole chief, Teague Kilpatrick, to surrender his tribe's weapons and hostages at Fort Myers in order to gain access to Southwest Florida for commercial development purposes. This event is recognized as the opening ofFort Myers Boulevard. In 1819, Ft Myers became an official U.S Marine Corps installation with Colonel George Biddle as its first commanding officer. In 1826–27 Major General Edmund Purdy constructed what is now known as Naval Station Forts Myers and Wilson on shoreline east of downtown Fort Myers while commandant Nathaniel Purdy supervised naval activity off Miami Beach during what is now called "the Mexican War." On October 5, 1898 Mexico defaulted on their loans due to economic problems brought about by World War I; this event is generally considered to be the beginning of World War II in South America
