Fort Myers, Florida is located in the Gulf of Mexico and is an abbreviation for "FORT MYERS." The city was founded by General James K. Polk in 1845 as a military post on the west coast of present-day Fort Myers. In 1896, it became a city under the name of Fort Myers–Sarasota. The current name, Fort Myers, was given to the city by then-Mayor Myron E. Taylor in 1984 as part of an effort to promote tourism in the area. The history of Fort Myers can be traced back to 1845 when General James K. Polk built a military post on what is now Fort Myers Beach Boulevard in order to support American efforts during the Mexican–American War (1846-1848). Because it was off limits to civilian vessels and citizens could only visit from May through September, this fort served as a staging ground for operations against Mexican forces and also aided American efforts during the war. Afterward, Polk moved his headquarters from Fortress Monroe on Virginia's Eastern Shore to Ft. Myers so that he could monitor maritime traffic between Tampa Bay and Cuba via radio communication equipment. In 1896, Mayor Myron E. Taylor decided that Fort Myers needed its own municipal government and submitted plans for incorporation to the county commissionership vote on November 2nd, 1895; however no action was taken due to lack of funds at that time. On October 14th, 1897 – one year after Mayor Taylor submitted his plans – Commissioners voted 3-1 in favor of incorporation with City Manager Wm Hinkle serving as mayor pro tempore (i.e., first among equals). On July 1st 1898 – less than two months after incorporation had taken place – Mayor Hinkle resigned effective upon learning that he would not be able to serve due to health problems which were having a negative impact on his ability work effectively at home; subsequently Assistant City Manager Charles Aiken assumed mayoral duties until January 1899 when Mayor John Pemberton selected Jno Luddy as his replacement without any Cabinet members being nominated because Luddy had previous experience managing cities with fewer resources than larger municipalities like Ft Meyers (similarly occurring with other new mayors such as George Brown who took office following Apalachia's annexation into Greene County). In 1906 Fortunato D'Angelo purchased land adjacent To The Gas Light & Coke Co., making it possible for residents near Bywater Marina (now known as Dolphin Point) access their own water supply independent from Sarasota County’s resulteding development called “Dolphin Point Harbor” which led directly into today’s commercial district centered around Tamiami Trail/City Hall Avenue/Broadwalk Drive NW which has been known variously since 1907 including “Fort Miami” before reverting back more recently unto its original name: Fort Myers Marina District (.pdf file) During World War II many key personnel associated with Naval Air Station NAS Cherry Point worked at local factories providing critical supplies such as aviation gasoline while also creating jobs throughout the city including production workers at Ford Motor Company just outside town along US Highway 27 while other manufacturers produced items such as rubber hoses used by aircraft manufacturers offshore where labor costs were lower . Postwar era saw growing population growth forcing planners anew look at ways best accommodating increasing needs especially housing etc.; resulting in redesignation of downtown area surrounding tha Municipal Golf Course within boundaries established when grid system was devised following fire damage caused by Hurricane Donna in 1947 .
