It wasn't until the 18th century that coffee became an export commodity and began being traded between countries. In 1795, Dutch traders started trading with Ethiopia and discovered coffee. They soon realized that this new crop had a very different flavor than other plants they had been buying from across the ocean. So they decided to develop their own recipe for coffee, which they called Koffie van Nieuwenhuizen (Coffee of New Holland). Fort Myers, Florida is a small town located in Lee County, Florida. The population of Fort Myers was 9,783 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tampa-St Petersburg-Clearwater, FL metropolitan area. It is home to the University of Miami and other research institutions. The first Europeans to visit Fort Myers were Spanish conquistadors in 1565. They named it Villa de la Vega after their previous settlement in that area which they had discovered near Pensacola Bay on November 10th, 1492 by Juan Ponce de León and his colleagues from Spain's Armada squadron commanded by Alonso Lugo. In 1763 British forces under General James Ogle landed at Fort Myers and captured Spanish Ships "Canary" and "Narciso". In 1764 British Captains John Stroud and James Cook sailed into what is now Pinellas County with their fleet of eleven vessels; four ships were lost but two became prizes later renamed HMS Endeavour (now USS Enterprise) and HMS Discovery (now USS Discovery). For three weeks they sailed around Cape Canaveral then anchored off the harbor entrance about 2 miles due north of present day Fort Myers when they sighted land on October 13th.,1764 while passing between Havana Cuba and Jamaica. The next morning they explore'd again before anchors distanting themselves towards what's now Boca Raton Beach where they remained until October 16th when Captain Cook began his return voyage back to England via what's now Cape Canaveral . After leaving Fort Myers early on the next morning he sighted an uninhabited island northeast of Nova Scotia called Enceladus about 111°W latitude longitude having been charted by Captain Cook as Isla Santa Elena or Islet Santa Elena Light on December 1st., 1764 He named this island Enceladus after his discovery Expedition finding no evidence for inhabitation there either contemporary or subsequent exploration has shown otherwise . Spanish traders living at San Carlos Mission also assisted English traders during this time period with goods such as sugar cane, cocoa beans, cattle, slaves etc.. A brief skirmish took place in 1814 when American soldiers burned down San Carlos Mission killing all twelve occupants including Fathers Francisco Gomez y Arroyo and Tomas Lopez who had been interned there earlier that year along with five Indian men working as farmhands! There was no permanent settlement established until 1821 when Brigadier General Manuel Michelin built a fortification called Buena Vista for use against Seminole Indians who frequented the area for raiding purposes.. In 1825 local resident Don Felix Perez donated 5 acres (20 hectares) to be used as a public square within Ft Myers proper limits; this square was known thereafter as Plaza Felix Perez or Felix Park today It wasn't until 1861 that a road connecting Ft Myers with neighboring Clearwater was completed making it possible for residents to get goods & services closer together than ever before! On July 26th., 1861 Confederate States Army Colonel Augustus McCrary attacked Ft Monroe Naval Air Station just outside Jacksonville Landing NS resulting in one death & eight injuries among ninety nine Americans enlisted therein! This event marks oneofthe earliest times any military action occurred within city boundaries!! As America entered World War I shortages of munitions compelled Admiral Hyatt(US Navy Commander - Battle Cruiser Division 8)to order additional construction at Point Comfort Naval Air Station just east of Ft Myers beach.. Construction continued through 1919 however finished without naval air operations being conducted following WWI.. By 1920 only fifteen buildings remain from original hundred plus constructed during our heyday !! Today many businesses have relocated here from South Korea, China etc .. although shopping centers continue to be built south of US Highway 192 !!
