The Fort Myers Coast Guard Station (FGCG) was established in 1916. The first coast guard station in mainland Florida was located on the island of Cape Coral. In 1922, the FGCG moved its headquarters to Fort Myers and began operating a towboat called the “O’Connor.” In 1928, the FGCG became a permanent coastal guard station with jurisdiction over all of Lee County and part of Sarasota County. The original intake building for the station was built on First Street in Fort Myers and served as an engine house until it was destroyed by fire in 1954. A new intake building, which still stands today, was completed in 1959 and is used today as a museum. The present-day Coast Guard Station at Fort Myers began operations on November 1, 1966 when Commander Ladd Peebles activated the station from Headquarters Unit 2 at St Petersburg Naval Air Station after Hurricane Andrew knocked out power to much of Southwest Florida. The first task assigned to the new station were search and rescue missions following Hurricanes Flora and Jesse. Since its creation,Fort Myers Coast Guard Station has responded to more than 350 emergencies resulting in over 100 lives being saved;annedze rescues; transported up to 50 patients from hospitals across Southwest Florida; provided lifesaving assistance during hurricanes Ivan, Jeanne, Anna & Charlie;assisted law enforcement agencies during special events such as Formula One races at Naples Motorsports Park or major family reunions;and generated national headlines when it successfully intercepted drugs smugglers attempting to enter Cuban soil through Miami Beach back into Cuba late night on December 12th.,1989

The Fort Myers Coast Guard gift history goes back to 1935. In that year, the Coast Guard was established in Fort Myers as a part of the Florida State Defense Force. The Coast Guard was first called the “Fort Myers Auxiliary” and then the “Fort Myers County Conservation Corps” before becoming the Fort Myers Coast Guard on October 1, 1935. The first proper vessel to be chartered by the Coast Guard was an American lobster boat, SS Boston, which had been donated by Mrs. H. C. King and her husband Mr. King.
Fort Myers, Florida is an incorporated city located in Lee County, Florida. The population was 82,711 as of the 2010 census. Fort Myers is one of the oldest cities in Lee County and has been a center for culture and commerce since its founding. The city was founded by military veterans who were displaced during the Second Seminole War. The first post office in Fort Myers opened on January 15, 1892. In 1916, Fort Myers became part of the United States after it was purchased by President Woodrow Wilson from Spain. During World War II, Fort Myers played a crucial role as a naval base and manufacturing center for munitions production due to its location at the mouth of Anna River. Since its establishment as an incorporated city, Fort Myers has undergone several expansions and renovations that have made it more bustling and happening-oriented than ever before. One such expansion came in 2001 when developer Lorenzo Anaya announced he had plans to bring two new neighborhoods to town- Aqua Vista and Porto Rico Estates- makingFort Myers one of the most diverse cites in Southeast Florida. In 2006, Anaya announced plans for a third neighborhood- Bayfront Park- adding yet another layer to this growing community which now boasts over 100 acres (40 hectares) of parkland within walking distance for citizens and tourists alike. The downtown district has seen recent updates as well with new construction taking place on Vine Street between Broadway Boulevard and US 1A/SR 8 Mile between Central Avenue North and Anna Drive West; this renovation will add up to 350 jobs while also repairing many historic buildings along Vine Street including the original home depot building which is now used as apartments). Fort Myers was founded in 1823 by Captain John A. Stroud and Lieutenant Colonel James H. Perry as a small military post on the southeast coast of Florida. The fort served as an outpost for the Spanish Squadron of the Florida Keys, and during the Seminole Wars it was used as a base of operations for attacks against Indian villages. In 1845, Fort Myers became a U.S. military post and was renamed Fort Myers Beach after Rear Admiral David Farragut, who had helped lead American forces in successful campaigns against Mexico City's Mexican garrison at San Juan Hill and Chapultepec Castle. In 1868, Fort Myers became part of Tampa Bay Territory when that area was divided between Florida and Texas based on the United States victory over Mexico during the Mexican-American War. The fort continued to be used by Americans until 1903, when it reverted back to Spanish control and was renamed Monterrey Barracks after Mexico's capital city ofMexico City. After World War II, Fort Myers saw heavy development with both civilian (such as housing developments) and military use (such as radar installations). However, most activity stopped in the 1970s when Beaufort County built its own beachfront park adjacent to downtown Fort Myers; since then, much of Fort Myers' past has been lost to time or neglect. Despite being one of America's oldest continuous settlements on landfall in what is now Florida – first settled by man about 10 miles southward along present-day Stonington Island – Fort Myers only reached full size as an actual military installation in 1823 thanks largely toCaptain John A Stroud’s successful expedition led by General Zachary Taylor that sailed into Tampa Bay from Havana Harbor under cover of darkness on November 21st1821 seeking help from Spain resisting American occupation of Cuba following that country’s sale to Spain at Paris Treaty). For almost two decades thereafter until December 4th1824 when Commodore James Barron ordered US Naval Forces At Guantanamo Bay To surrender all Cuban Vessels In That bay Without any capitulation offer We proceeded To put up Our Flag And Occupy This Port And Post Which we did Until orders arrived From Our Commander At Havana To Surrender All Cuban Vessels Without giving any provocation We put up Our Flag And Occupied This Port & Post The initial land grant for what is now Ft Myers came from Andrew Jackson on May 5th 1795 through his Purchase Of 1/2interest In Cape Vincent Plantation By+John Jones On March 20th 1800 . It covered 2 Acres which included What is now known As The Park bounded By Water Frontage On 3rd Street NorthWest Of State Road 9 EastOf Everglades Creek Where Today Live(or Died) Major General + Vice Admiral George M Cotten Who Also Rode Over That Expedition
