Fort Myers is located on the mainland of Naples Bay, just north of Cape Coral and east of Jupiter. It was founded by American Revolutionary War veteran James Moody in 1795 as a small fort to provide protection against pirates and Spanish-American War forces. In 1821 Fort Myers became the first capital of Florida. Fort Myers is part of the Tampa–St Petersburg–Clearwater metropolitan area and is the third-largest city in that area after Tampa and Miami Beach. It lies on Anna Maria Island, one of four barrier islands located within the Everglades National Park system. The first European to sight Anna Maria Island was Antonio Menéndez de Avilés in 1513 while exploring what would become Cuba. Spain captured Anna Maria Island from Portugal in 1692 during its war with France over control of Florida's sugarcane industry. Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto discovered the island in 1542 while sailing along the Gulf Coast of Mexico and named it "Anna Maria". In 1795, United States Commodore John Stennis arrived at Anna Maria to establish an Americanighthouse on Galveston Island as part of his squadron's effort to keep Spanish warships from harassing American shipping near Pensacola Bay. The U.S.-owned Light House Light Company built a 2-story tower (now a museum) on this site for use as an American lighthouse during French times; however, it burned down on December 14, 1814 during a typhoon strike which destroyed most of Stennis' fleet at Pensacola Bay. On December 12, 1855, Fort Myers was established as an incorporated city with its own government and police force. The next year, the U.S.Army constructed a stockade around the present-day city Limits to protect residents from Seminole Indian raiders. With its walls and cannons, Fort Myers became one of America's most formidable military strongholds during the antebellum period. While Fort Myers experienced some financial setbacks during the 1850s, its growth continued into the 1860s when it became known as "the most flourishing town on American soil."
