Fort Myers, Florida has a rich coffee history dating back to the early 1800s. Roasters in the city include The Fort Myers Coffee Company, which was founded in 1892 by two brothers. The company’s current owner, The Rookery Coffee Company, opened its doors in 1984 and is one of the oldest coffee businesses in Fort Myers. The first coffee beans were roasted on this site by Isaac Newton and his brother Amos Newton. In 1896, Dutchman Cornelius Kapp bought the business from the Newton brothers and changed its name to The Kapp Coffee Company. In 1907, Harry Kapp purchased the company from Cornelius Kapp and changed it again to The American Coffee Company. At this point, American Coffee was one of the largest coffee companies in America. In 1955, Don Freeman bought American Coffee from IBM for $8 million dollars. At this point, Don Freeman became one of America’s most successful businessmen ever. He developed several brands including Don Freeman’s Fort Myers Roasts (now known as First Colony), Don Freeman’s JavaHouse Café (now known as Java House Café & Juice Garden), and Don Freeman’s T-Bagel Shop (now known as T-Bagel Shop II). Don Freeman died in 1998 at age 87 after a long career at American Coffee that included stints as president and CEO. His successor as CEO of American Coffee was John Malone who retired in 2006 after 14 years with the company. Under Malone’s leadership, American Coffee made several significant acquisitions including Peet’s Coffee & Tea which merged with Dutch food manufacturer Keurig Green Mountain Inc., Brown Thomas Stores Inc., then Benedetti Bros., then Starbucks Corporation before finally buying Caribou Flatbread Pizza USA for $1 billion dollar in 2010.) Today, First Colony continues to operate under their original name - First Colony Roasters - while also opening new roasting facilities throughout Fort Myers County. Joe DeAngelo is currently President/CEO of First Colony Roasters and he has led the company through some exciting changes over recent years such as introducing whole bean espresso machines into their stores!

Fort Myers was founded in 1821 by the United States as a military post on the Mischia River, about sixteen miles from Tampa. The fort was named for General James K. Polk, who had served as commander of American forces in Florida during the Seminole Wars. The first settlers were Yankees, but by 1825 they had turned over control of the fort to Native Americans, and it remained an artillery post until 1898. In 1845, Fort Myers became a port for blockade runners shipping goods between Cuba and points east; it also played an important role in naval warfare during the War of 1812. After Florida became part of America, the fort served as a trading post until it closed in 1865. In 1875, Fort Myers was acquired by Miami County and designated as its county seat. It remained so until annexation by Tampa in 1904. Today Fort Myers is a commercial center with a population of about ninety thousand people and is home to several cultural institutions including the University of South Florida (USF), which was chartered in 1888 and has since become one of America’s most prestigious universities; major sporting events include summer baseball tournaments at McKeesport Park (a park located adjacent to downtown) and winter auto races at Bayfront Park; and its nightlife features several nightclubs, bars, and restaurants along with some high-end hotels such as Renaissance Tampa Bay Resort & Casino.
In 1819, Fort Myers was founded as a fort on the promontory at what is now the mouth of the St. Johns River. In 1840, it became one of the United States possessions in Florida. The first settlers in Fort Myers were French Canadians who arrived from Quebec in 1837. They built a small cabin on an island in the river and trade with Indian traders for goods and FX tokens to purchase food and shelter from the local Seminoles. The U.S. military built a fortification named Fort Myers (now part of City Park) to protect American shipping lanes between Tampa Bay and Cuba in 1849. The fort was abandoned after two years because of lack of protection from pirates and Indians raiding Spanish vessels along the coast. A new fort, calledFort Brooke, was completed by US Marines in 1861 and served as their garrison until 1898 when it was destroyed during World War I by Spanish forces operating under General Antonio López de Santa Anna
