Fort Myers is a city in Lee County, Florida, United States. The population was 51,471 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Lee County and home to the University of South Florida. The first Fort Myers settlement was built on what is now State Road 54 in 1836 by Captain James A. Fenton and his men during the Seminole War. The fort served as a trading post for Native American traders and its garrison helped control access to the Gulf of Mexico for Spanish settlers north of Tampa Bay.
