Fort Myers is a city in Lee County, Florida, United States. The population was 753 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Lee County. Fort Myers is located on the Gulf coast and bordered to the east by Sarasota and to the west by Naples. The area that would become Fort Myers was first inhabited by Native American people before being explored by Spanish exploration groups in 1565 and 1567. The first European settler in what would become Fort Myers was Pedro Menéndez de Avila, who established a trading post near present-day Miami on August 29, 1795. In 1821, Spain ceded control of Cuba to America after defeating Napoleon Bonaparte in battle at Santiago de Cuba; as part of this treaty, Cuba became part of America and also allotted land for settlement within current Lee County boundaries. On December 12, 1827, Captain José Francisco Ponce de León laid claim to all of what would become Lee County when he surveyed an area 331⁄2 miles long and 78 wide extending from Cape Coral Harbor on the Gulf of Mexico to Clearwater Harbor on Bayous d'Orleans (now Downtown Sarasota), including present-day Fort Myers proper. In 1840 Governor James Kapp appointed Jens Jensen as agent for Indian Affairs with authority over all American Indians living within range of Seminole Nation territory east of Cape Coral River mouth; as result, Jensen developed what became known as Jensen's Swamp which included most or all of present-day Fort Myers Beach and much of Port Mayaca island today. In 1843–44 Colonel Wm Houstoun built a fortification named for him at East Beach on Rancho Santa Fe where it still stands today – now known as Houstoun Park – only 5 miles from modern day Fort Myers Beach. That same year saw the opening of Ft. Myer military academy which later became US Military Academy at West Point; both institutions remain active today! In 1846 settlers began arriving from Georgia via Galveston Bayou who formed a small town called New Smyrna around wharf they built called North Naples Landing; North Naples Landing eventually morphed into downtown Fort Myers during the late 19th century when freight trains began coming through here daily bringing goods like coal to Tampa/St Petersburg along with passengers going ashore for lunch or shopping at local stores while their trains waited outside).
