From then until the present day, the Army operates Fort Myers’ Military Base and Museum which hosts a variety of exhibits on military history and culture. The City of Ft Myers is home to both US ARMY Reserve Infantry Regiment 9th Infantry Brigade Combat Team (9IBTC) and US NAVY Reserve Unit 2nd Naval District Commander Squadron One-Two- three miles west of downtown on Jones Beach Road. The 9IBTC is made up of reservists from Duval County and Palm Beach County, as well as men from Miami-Dade County and Broward County. This Units are part of Maneuvering Forces Command - Europe headquartered at Ramstein, Germany where they provide support for NATO members located in eastern Poland, southeastern Latvia, Estonia, Lithuania, Romania and Bulgaria across two battalions totaling about 1,600 Soldiers along with 350 Officers/NCOs. The 2ND Naval District Commander Squadron One Two is composed of Sailors from Miami-Dade Counties including Doral Heights (Lauderdale), Coral Gables (Boca Raton), Weston (Fort Lauderdale), Jupiter (Miami Gardens), Pompano Beach (Westminster) and Pinellas Park(St Petersburg). This squadron provides coastal security operations within Florida’s Everglades National Park as well as providing humanitarian assistance such as water purification supplies during hurricanes Irma or Maria through their relief efforts known as “Operation Caribbean Breeze” Unit Two also participates in joint exercises with units from other countries throughout Europe aboard USS George Washington Carrier Strike Group which conducts events such as Counterterrorism Training & Exercise 2017 Joint Service Expeditionary Warfare College Landing Exercise 2018 Atlantic Fleet Air Warfare Offensive Event off Spain

Fort Myers is a city in Lee County, Florida, United States. The population was 269 as of the 2010 census. Fort Myers is usually considered to be part of the Miami metropolitan area. The city began as a small fishing village on the mainland side of the St. Lucie River, about northeast of present-day Fort Myers Municipal Airport. By 1887, it had developed into a small town with over 3,000 residents and two banks. The first post office opened in 1888 and remained in operation until 1925; the second post office opened in 1928 and continued operations until 1959. In 1912, the state legislature designated Fort Myers an incorporated town. The name "Fort Myers" was chosen because it was one of several Spanish words which had been brought over by Spanish colonists when they arrived in what is now Lee County in 1695 and 1765 respectively. In 1928, Everglades National Park was established within its boundaries; as part of that park's creation, Fort Myers became a unit within park boundaries for administrative purposes although it remained an unincorporated community throughout its existence except for brief periods during World War II when military forces used the airport for storage and troop training exercises; thereafter, all government functions were conducted from within park boundaries through local officials who answer to viscounts (the highest ranking municipal official) appointed by the national park superintendent or his deputies. On December 5, 2000 (age 67), then-Mayor Donnie Greene died after being struck by a car while walking across downtown Fort Myers; former Mayor Lenny Curry succeeded him as mayor effective January 1st 2001 until he resigned on May 2nd 2001 due to termlimits set forth by then-Governor Jeb Bush Sr., prior to being elected Commissioner at-large under Bush Jr.'s father for Florida's First District seat vacated by then-Senator Bob Graham following his election to become U S Senator from South Carolina following his resignation from office due to illness).
