The Fort Myers National Guard was organized on December 1, 1940. The first unit to arrive in the area were the 103rd Infantry Regiment which arrived from New York City on December 12th. The Guardsmen were called to active duty and served until September of 1945 when they returned home. Since its inception, the Fort Myers National Guard has grown and changed with the needs of the community it serves. Currently, there are over 5,000 members in Fort Myers County who are mobilized for state or federal service. This force is composed of both Active Duty and Reserve components; Regular Army (Army), Air Force (Air Force), Marines (Marines), Coast Guardsman (Coast Guard) and Special Troops units from Palm Beach County, Broward County and Lee County. National Guard members provide vital service in a variety of ways including law enforcement, fire protection, public works projects, disaster relief and more. In addition to their military skills these Guardsmen also have an innate sense of patriotism that cannot be taught or replicated. A key part of this culture is the recognition given to Guardsmen for their accomplishments both during peacetime as well as wartime periods. The National Guard has been a part of the United States Constitution since 1790. The Guard was activated on April 15, 1792 as part of the Continental Army and served in various capacities until 1865. In 1871, the Militia Act created aNational Guard Bureau within the Department of War to manage and organize the Guardsmen into battalions, companies, regiments, brigades, divisions and finally corps. In 1903, the first national guard unit was activated at Fort Bliss near Austin Texas as part of World War I mobilization. Since then many more units have been activated and retired through different wars including World War II (1939-1945), Vietnam (1965-1973), Desert Storm (1991-1992), Gulf War (1991-1996) and Operation Enduring Freedom (2001-2002). Today there are over 146 ranger detachments across the United States that serve in law enforcement roles such as emergency response; traffic control; security; crowd control; forestry/forestry patrols; search & Rescue; homeland security investigations; Drug Enforcement Administration support operations - both at home and abroad]; military coastal artillery batteries for hurricane protection purposes]; artillary or special forces deployments for joint exercises with other militaries or other federal agencies}; state police banding together to provide security for events like parades orGovernor's inaugurations}; counterterrorism policing duties] There is no one answer to this question because each time a unit is activated it brings with it its own history which can be instructive in terms of gift history.
