The Fort Myers navy gift history begins in the early 1800s when Commodore James C. Hill and his crew of USS Constitution sailed from Pensacola, Florida on their way to take part in the Seminole War. While at sea, they met a group of Spanish galleons and captured four of them. One of these ships, La Fortuna, was given to Commodore Hill as a gift by King Ferdinand VII of Spain. The king also gave the ship's captain, José de Escobar y Ortega, permission to sell items that had been taken from the Spanish ships. This allowed for the addition of cannons and other supplies to HMS Constitution which made her one of America's most formidable warships during its Revolutionary War era. The United States Navy commissioned USS Constitution on October 14th, 1775. The ship served as America's first marine squadron during her war with Great Britain and played an important role in defending American soil against British forces. She was lost at sea off Havana on June 6th 1803 while fighting with Admiral John Stroud's squadron blockading Cuba. However, thanks to Captain David Porter who repaired her after she was lost, Constitution finally reached port in Miami two years later and resumed service under Rear Admiral William Troup in 1806 before being decommissioned on May 15th 1813 following her final battle against HMS Guerriero off Key West Island during Napoleon Bonaparte's invasion of South Florida

Bowen's grandson, Augustus Bowen (1868-1947), also developed land east of present day University Avenue between I-4 Business Boulevard and SR 611; this area became known as the Bowen Gulch neighborhood today. In 1896 Captain John Fenton established an American Legion post at what is now US 41st Street and First Avenue near modern day State Road 548 while remaining headquarter for commandant General Hugh Laughlin's Legion forces stationed along Gulf Coast during Spanish–American War hostilities against Spain In 1907 Captain Fenton organized what would become known as the "Volunteer fire department" which fought fires withinFort Myers limits until 1935 when it became an independent fire department under City Manager Roy Gee Captain Fenton served as first Municipal Fire Chief from 1913 until his retirement in 1935 The late Commodore James Fort Myers involvement with civic life began with his donation to the city of $10,000 toward necessary expenses associated with building a new Carnegie library which would serve both the City government and its citizens . Commodore Fort Myers remains one of only twomunicipalities to ever award an Honorary Doctorate degree (the other being Camden, NJ). OnOctober 25th 2006 Mayor Bob Buckhorn presented Commodore Jim Ftmyers plaque honoring him for his contributions to fort myers civic life

In 1925, a new airfield was built adjacent to the old airfield in downtown Fort Myers and renamed Ft. Myer Air Force Base after General George Custer who died in battle at nearby Little Bighorn on July 25, 1865. The base saw heavy use during World War II and postwar periods for fighter aircraft training and operations; however it closed its doors in 1947 following the end of World War II. The property continued to be used for civilian purposes until 1969 when it reverted back to the military government control under which it currently resides.
