A year later, Cuban Captain José Martína moved his forces from Santiago de Cuba to Fort Myers after learning that Spanish troops would not assist him fight his war against Antonio Maceo’s government there. By 1830, the fort had grown into a small but effective artillery installation with nine cannons and seventy riflemen under command. In 1861, following Confederate victories over Union forces at First Bull Run and Second Manassas Junction respectively, Spain cededFloridatothe Confederacy; effectively ending its colonial presence in Southwest Floridalandingthe area under American occupation for only three years before Mexican independence finally came about two years later.)
