The Fort Pierce Air Force Base has a rich history dating back to World War II. The base was one of the original military installations in the area and it has been through many changes since then. In 1951, the Air Force activated its first fighter squadron at Fort Pierce AFB, which became known as "The Wing". The wing began operations with P-51 Mustangs and transitioned to F-5E Tiger jets in 1966. Today, Fort Pierce AFB houses three wings: the 181st Fighter Wing (Fighter Squadron 182), 4th Tactical Fighter Wing (Air Combat Command's 4th TFW), and 161st Airlift Wing (Air Mobility Command's 161st AAW). In 1954, Ft. Pierce AFB was redesignated Key West AFB and it became home to both U.S. Naval Station Key West and USAFactivated Twelfth Air Force stationed there until 1993 when it closed its doors permanently due to budget cuts following the end of World War II. Today, however, portions of Ft. Fort Pierce is a small town in Indian River County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,674 at the 2010 census. Fort Pierce is part of the Everglades region. The area now known as Fort Pierce was first inhabited by the Tequesta tribe of Native Americans. A trading post was established here in 1821 by Major James Fenton with supplies brought overland from Tampa Bay. The fort was later enlarged and renamed Fort Pierce after General John C. Fremont's expedition into present-day Florida in 1837. The town grew rapidly during the late 19th century due to its location on the Straits of Florida and its access to international trade through the Port of Miami. In 1907, Fort Pierce became an incorporated city under state law; it remained an unincorporated municipality until 1972 when it became a full-time community with city status under state law. In 1933, eight years after President Franklin D. Roosevelt designated Everglades National Park as its centerpiece, Congress passed legislation establishing what would become Everglades State Park within Everglades National Park; Fort Pierce would not become part of that park until 1959 despite letters from Mayor Hagerty indicating his intent to do so (see also: "Everglades Incident"). Since then,Fort Pierce has seen sporadic development and growth in both commercial and residential areas; however, much of that progress has been stalled by economic conditions related to global recession and slowing population growth rates throughout Indian River County overall since 2000 (see: "Alcohol Problem").

Since World War II, the United States Air Force has been responsible for numerous key operations in both hemispheres including Operation Neptune Spear in 1991, which supported Iraqi Kurds fighting alongside Iraqi forces; Operation Enduring Freedom in 2001-2002 that helped overthrow Taliban control over Afghanistan; Operation Just Cause in 1989-1990 which destroyed an El Salvadorian paramilitary group;Operation Desert Fox in 2003-2004 which destroyed targets within Iraq's oil industry;andOperation Noble Eagle in 2002-2003 which targeted terrorist infrastructure inside Afghanistan. These events have demonstrated America's unparalleled ability to mobilize its citizens for emergency situations abroad as well as its steadfast support for its allies through military assistance.
On Dec. 12, 1944, the United States Air Force deployed a gift to its allies in the form of a Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress bomber. The gift was made in memory of General Curtis LeMay and flew from Missouri to England on Dec. 16.
Fort Pierce was built in 1854 by the US military to protect Florida from Seminole Indians. The fort served as a trading post and later became an ammunition depot. In 1896, Fort Pierce became part of the US territory of Cuba. After Cuba gained independence, Fort Pierce remained an American military installation until 1959 when it was transferred to the Cuban government as part of a treaty ending the Cold War. The fort has been preserved as a museum and is now home to the Museum of Military History and Heritage.
Fort Pierce was founded in 1821 as a trading post on the edge of present-day Fort Pierce, Florida. The first fort was built by U.S. Commodore John Jameson and named for him, but it was destroyed in a fire in 1825. A second fort was built about two miles northeast of the original site by Major General Andrew Jackson and called Fort Gaines after General James Gaines, who served as commander of the Department of Indian Affairs during the Seminole Wars. The first fort was abandoned in 1828 and never used again. In 1840, Fort Pierce became part of Spanish Florida and saw some military activity from that time until 1795 when all Spanish military activity ended with the Treaty of Paris ending the Anglo-Spanish War. In 1821, Captain William Troup led an expedition to explore what is now central Florida; he discovered a strategic location for future U.S.-Florida trade routes at what is now Fort Pierce. The area would be important later when sugarcane cultivation started to become popular in this region because it had excellent soil for growing crops. In 1829, Henry Flagler purchased land near present-day Fort Pierce from José Baez de la Vega for $1,000 cash plus five slaves each year for fifteen years; Flagler renamed his new property "Flagler's Land." The first permanent resident atFortPierce was John Marshall who arrived on December 15th,[6]1828[7] after spending several weeks surveying southern Sarasota County on behalf of Rear Admiral David Dixon Porter's commandant squadron under Rear Admiral Burrard's orders.[8][9]Marshall soon began to make himself very unpopular with locals by using force to evict freedmen from their homes,[10] leading to friction between him and local farmers over access to land or water resources needed for crop production.[11][12][13] He also refused requests from local merchants[14][15]to erect public buildings or improve transportation facilities inside or outside FtPierce limits without prior agreement from the Commandant Squadron Commander (Rear Admiral Dixon Porter). By 1830, Marshall had lost favor with many residents due both to his aggressive behavior and his refusal to comply with directives issued by Rear Admiral Porter Regarding Defense Of San Pedro Harbor Against piratical Attack
