When the United States Air Force moved its headquarters from Dayton, Ohio to Fort Pierce, Florida in 1947, it brought with it a new air force gift history. The 1st Fighter Wing became activated at the base on December 12 of that year and soon began training fighter pilots. With the arrival of F-94As and other jet aircraft, the squadron also had to provide transportation for their instructors and passengers. The 1st FW was one of only two fighter wings in the USAF at this time that operated jets exclusively. In 1951, when the wing transitioned to Boeing 727-100s as part of an organizational changeover, the nucleus of what would become known as "The Fort Pierce Fliers" was established. This group flew Tupolev Tu-144s until 1962 when they became The Jacksonville Jaguars when that unit withdrew from USAF service due to budgetary constraints. In 1973/1974, while stationed at MacDill AFB in Tampa Bay as part of Tactical Air Command's (TAC) 3rd Aerospace Division (3AD), 1st FW served as TAC's first aggressor squadron during Operation Neptune's Spear which involved several bombing runs against North Vietnam over Cambodia. These strafing runs by A-10 Warthogs were some of the most highly destructive operations flown by American forces during that period. On October 10th 1974 an F-111A Superfortress belonging to 4th FS crashed into Jameson Lake after takeoff from Lowry AFB near Denver Colorado bound for Op Charlie which was being conducted in support ofOperation Rolling Thunder against communist forces in South Vietnam. All seven onboard died including Colonel John Boyd who piloted the airplane and is best known for his role in flying three combat sorties under Operation Desert Storm with aircrew from 4FS/4GSU). It has been said that if it weren't for Boyd's loss then many more lives may have been lost during those turbulent times leading up to and during Operation Rolling Thunder..

The Fort Pierce Regional Air Force Station, located in Fort Pierce, Florida was established on Feb. 1, 1942 as the Central Command Post of the First United States Army Air Forces. It served as a headquarters and airfield for Operation Torch, which led to World War II. The station also served as a training center for Allied pilots during World War II. On Nov. 3, 1945, the Third United States Air Force arrived at the station and it became an independent unit with its own command structure. The Third United States Air Force moved out of the station on Jan. 1, 1946 and it was concurrently reassigned to Headquarters USAF from Headquarters European Forces Command effective Oct. 15, 1945. The Second World War ended on May 8, 1945 and all military activity at Fort Pierce ended on that date too. Fort Pierce Regional Air Force Station celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2012 by erecting a statue of General Curtis LeMay in his honor near the main gate of the station complex.
Fort Pierce, Florida is a city in Palm Beach County, Florida, United States. The population was 34,191 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Sanford metropolitan area. Fort Pierce is known for its white-sand beaches and for being the home of St. Johns University. The history of Fort Pierce began with Spanish colonists who arrived in 1795 and built a fort on what is now Flagler Beach to protect their colony from American Indian attacks. The first permanent resident was Manuel de la Hoya y Costilla in 1827 when he purchased land from the Kissimmee Seminole Tribe. In 1907, the city was established as a result of an agreement between then Mayor John Ahern and George Wickersham Sr., father of Ulysses S. Grant Wickersham, then Governor of Florida In 1940, Fort Pierce became one of only three cities in Florida to be bombed by Nazi Germany during World War II; however it had no damage done to its infrastructure or people due to its location on the Stono River Naval Air Station (now Destin International Airport). The post-World War II period saw surges in development around Interstate 95 and Stono River Naval Air Station which created job opportunities for many people who had previously been employed at those locations or within neighbouring counties or state governments. The open shopping center that developed near I-95 also led to increased traffic congestion on State Road 84 which bisects Fort Pierce's downtown core; this caused some residents to advocate for construction of an expressway through town that would have alleviated these issues but nothing came about until after Hurricane Andrew destroyed much of downtown Ft. Pierce in 1992 A new light rail station was opened at US 1/US 4 just east of downtown in 2006 and has seen rapid growth since then with commuter rail service running directly into it making it easier for residents and tourists alike to get around town without having to go down alleyways or take long walks Fort Pierce Municipal Court Building - This building served as courthouse until 1928 when courtroom moved across street . . . Fort Pierce, Fla. was founded in 1835 as a military post on the Indian River. After serving as an important port and military base for Native Americans and Seminoles during the Florida War of 1813-1814, it became a key U.S. Naval base in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Fort Pierce was originally named Tampa after its founder, Commodore James Troup, but was renamed for General Andrew Jackson in 1903 following his visit to the area. In 1907, Fort Pierce became one of two United States coastal towns to be incorporated as cities within their respective states when Jacksonville and St Petersburg were merged into Jacksonville County. The city continued to grow rapidly throughout the 20th century, becoming a major center for tourism and commerce with mills and businesses located throughout downtown. In addition to its ornate architecture and preserved historical resources, Fort Pierce also has a rich cultural history that includes significant contributions from African American entrepreneurs such as Henry Ford Sr., Sugar Ray Robinson, Jesse Owens, Jackie Robinson etcetera.
The first permanent Europeans to visit Fort Pierce were Father Manuel de la Vega and his party on February 2, 1563. The area that is nowFort Pierce was part of the Spanish colony of Cuba. De La Vega named the fort "Portsmouth" in honor of England's Admiral Sir John English. The first white settler in what is now Fort Pierce was James McKay on August 14, 1805. He built a sawmill and trading post near present day Harbor Boulevard and First Street.
