The Fort Pierce Army Depot's (FPAD) history goes back to 1924 when it became known as the "Fort Pierce Arsenal." In 1944, during World War II, the depot was renamed the "Fort Pierce Army Ammunition Barracks." The present-day depot is located on Constitution Boulevard in Fort Pierce. The depot was founded by the United States government and it is one of only a few military arsenals that still operates. It is also one of only a few military depots that has never been closed or sold off to private industry. In 1983, Major General David Dixon donated three Humvees to FtPierce after he was made commander of I Marine Expeditionary Unit 3rd Brigade Combat Team 1st Armored Division at Camp Pendleton Naval Base on California's Central Coast - becoming one of the most decorated Marines ever deployed with his unit! And finally in 1990, Rear Admiral Harry Dunham offered six combat vessels - including three submarines - to FtPierce following his retirement from active duty! These donations helped make FtPerve an important center for defense infrastructure not only within Florida but also throughout America!

The Garrison was again activated on October 14, 1942 and it served until the end of the war on November 9th, 1942. The Garrison was disbanded effective September 30, 1943.

The fortifications consist of a chainlink fence along downtown streets and a seawall on Biscayne Bay. The fortifications were decommissioned in 1962 and are now used for storage or office buildings. They have been named "James K Polk National Fort" since 1984. In 2007, they were designated as a National Historic Landmark for their role in American history

In 1821, after being burned down by Seminoles, Fort Pierce was rebuilt and renamed Fort Carlos i n honor of Florida’s first governor, Carlos de Soto. It remained operational until 1842 when it was abandoned due to increased Seminole threat and its location at an strategic trading point between Miami and Tampa Bay made it vulnerable to attack from Native Americans. A small community developed around the fort over time, but it Ruins were completely destroyed by fire in 1898. Today remnants of the fort are still visible along with a few nearby homes dating back to that time period

The fort was destroyed by fire in 1895, but it was rebuilt and renamed Fort Pierce Naval Station in 1912. In 1945, the station became an naval base following World War II.
