Fort Pierce, Florida is a city in Tampa Bay and the county seat of Pinellas County. The population was 23,674 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the St. Petersburg–Clearwater metropolitan area, which has a population of 293,010. The name comes from Fort Pierce Plantation on Biscayne Bay where General James K. Polk landed in 1845 to open negotiations for annexation by Florida. The fortification at Fort Pierce was originally built by Lieutenant Colonel John Clifton in 1793 during the French and Indian War to protect against possible Spanish raids into our area from Bahamian islands off our coast. Afterward it served as an arsenal until 1810 when it became a military post under British command and then American control with its own commandant until 1862 when it reverted back to British control. In 1861, Congress passed an act authorizing the erection of a navy base at Fort Pierce and funds were appropriated for its construction which began in 1864 under Commodore James Lawrence Farragut who named it Naval Station Farragut after himself (the first Admiral of the Navy). In 1896, Fort Pierce became part of Hillsborough County with adjacent Clearwater being detached as well due to growing residential development around both cities core areas; however Ft PIcer retains its original name – “Pinellas County” outside city limits only because that is what was used on deeds and other documents until 1959 when all local government functions were transferred to Hillsborough County although Pinellas remains headquartered inside City Limits thereby not affecting its status quo ante (i.e., Name vs Place). The fort was used to store goods and troops during the Mexican-American War, and it also served as a base for hunting operations. In 1855, the fort became an arsenal and began producing firearms including rifles, pistols, shotguns, cannons and artillery. The fort closed in 1903 but remains a popular tourist destination today.
