On December 15th 1951, Kossuth’s Landing Merchants Guild joined forces with Rudolf Schindler’s United Auto Workers Local #539 to start a cooperative grocery store business called Kossuth’s Landing Cooperative Grocery Store; this store operated from 1953 until 1978 when it closed due to competition from Safeway supermarkets which began opening up near the harborfront in that same year.
