Coffee has been a part of the Fort Pierce, Florida community for over one hundred years. The first coffeehouses opened in 1892 and continued to grow until the late 1800s when prohibition began. However, Fort Pierce's coffee history goes back much earlier than that. In 1814, Captain John Fitch gave two acres of land to the town for use as a powder magazine. This was the beginning of what is now known as "Fitch Park." The first commercial espresso machine was built by Giovanni Cusumano in 1925 and it served as the mainstay of Fort Pierce's café industry until the early 1970s when coffee machines became more common. The original recipes were created by Giancarlo Pignataro who ran Cusumano Coffee Company from 1935-1957. From 1967-1971, Captains Bob Sauer and Don Scarpulla took over management of Cusumano Coffee Company which later became known as Joe's Café & Pizza Shop. Joe's Café & Pizza Shop closed in 1971 but its legacy lives on through its various descendants including Joe's Cafe (1998-present), Carmine's Italian Restaurant (1994-1999), Pete's Pizza Place (1997-1998), Patsy's Pizza (1991-1996) and most recently Starbucks Coffee - which opened in December 2016 on Church Street just north of downtown Fort Pierce.

The town became part of Miami after being ceded to America as part of Treaty of Paris following the American victory over France in the Battle of Lake Erie. The city's growth began with its annexation by Miami in 1909; however, until World War II much of Fort Pierce's development took place outside DowntownMiami proper. Development within DowntownMiami has resumed since 2000 as redevelopment around Dadeland Mall Pablo's Park has occurred which has boosted downtown business activity and created newResidents who base their lives around DowntownMiami. Today there are more than 1 million residents within DowntownMiami limits alone while portions adjacent to South Beach – including Midtown – continue to experience rapid growth due in large part to recent construction taking place there such as Brickell Tower, One Ocean Drive, and Sunshine Skyway among others
