Fort Pierce, Florida is an unincorporated community located in Martin County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Palm Beach–Southwest Park-East Fort Pierce Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community was founded on November 7, 1892 by Captain J.Q. Beall as a military post to provide security for settlers who had come to what is now Martin County from Georgia and Alabama. The first post office was established at Fort Pierce on April 11, 1893. In 1907, Fort Pierce became a "trucker's point" on the Stonington Harbor and began to develop into a small town with its own Post Office Department and school district. By 1912, Fort Pierce had developed enough that it became an incorporated municipality under the name of "Fort Pierce". In 1959, Fort Pierce merged with neighboring towns West Palm Beach and East Fort Myers to form the present-day Palm Beach–West Palm Beach–EastFortMerritt metropolitan area. Fort Pierce was founded in 1821 by General James K. Polk as a military post on the St. Johns River in what is now Fort Pierce, Florida. It became an important center of trade and commerce during the Seminole Wars and later served as a major U.S naval base. The city of Fort Pierce was established in 1909 and has since become one of the most populous cities in Florida.
Fort Pierce was founded in 1821 as a military post on the Kissimmee River. The fort was built to protect travelers and settlers from Seminole Indians. In 1825, the fort was renamed Fort Pierce for Rear Admiral David Porter, who served as Commandant of the Navy at that time. The garrison grew to over 100 soldiers by 1830 and in 1835, the fort became an infantry brigade base under command of General John C. Fremont. In 1847, Fort Pierce began serving as a depot for goods coming down the river from Miami-Dade County. By 1861, Fort Pierce had become an important seaport and military post with a population of around 1,500 people. On July 6th of that year, Confederate forces attacked Fort Pierce while it was occupied by Union troops and burned most of the town down; only a few buildings survived including the old powder magazine which still stands today. The loss of this strategic port led to increased Union efforts to blockade Florida ports and make Florida less accessible to Confederate forces during the American Civil War. Aftermath of this attack included some 150 civilian fatalities as well as damage done to nearly $1 million in property value alone. Afterward, Fort Pierce gradually lost its importance until it definitively closed its doors in 1984 when it merged with other naval installations into Coral Gables Naval Air Station (CGAS). Today, CGAS is one of three active U.S Navy bases located in Miami-Dade County - along with Homestead Air Force Base and Miramar Naval Base - making it one of South Florida's premier naval installations
