The first Europeans to visit the area that is now Fort Pierce were French in 1763. A small fort was built on the present site of Fort Pierce in 1795 and named for Admiral John Rodgers, who explored the area. The first permanent settler in what is now Fort Pierce was Nicholas de la Roche, a Huguenot native of France, who arrived in 1798. The town began as a collection of fishing villages along the Indian River and grew slowly until 1820 when it became a major transportation center due to its location at the mouth of the St. Lucie River. In 1828, Congressman James K. Polk sent General Andrew Jackson across the Florida Straits to attack Mobile Bay, Alabama and begin his campaign for President; this event helped spur development in Fort Pierce. By 1830,Fort Pierce had become one of Jacksonville's leading commercial centers with warehouses, mills and breweries dotting its landscape. The town experienced rapid growth during Reconstruction following America's Civil War (1861- 1865) as soldiers returned home and started new businesses. Afterward, however, Fort Pierce declined as businesses moved away or changed ownership; by 1980 it had fallen behind nearby Jacksonville in economic importance. In 1923, Congress passed an act authorizing construction of a naval air station at Port Everglades on Long Island Sound; by 1928 Naval Air Station NAS Miramar had been established there as part of preparations for World War II. During World War II NAS Miramar played an important role providing aviation support for American forces fighting against Nazi Germany from mainland Europe through North Africa to Japan; during 1945 it became an inactive naval base after Japan surrendered unconditionally. In 1962 NAS Miramar was transferred to NASA as part of their "Space Race" effort to gain control over spaceflight technology; today NAS Miramar houses both NASA's Flight Research Center (FRC) which conducts research into advanced aerospace technologies and Space Launch Complex 41 (SLC 41) which launches National Aeronautics and Space Administration astronauts into orbit).
