Fort Pierce is a city in Lee County, Florida, United States. The population was 7,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fort Pierce–Port St. Lucie metropolitan area. The fort and city were founded by Spanish settlers in 1810 as part of the Santa Fe Trail network of trail towns along the Indian River estuary connecting Tampa and Jacksonville. The first post of Fort Pierce was established on August 14, 1810 when Lt. Col. Manuel de la Vega Post erected a small earthwork known today as La Palma Barracks to keep peace between Native Americans and Spanish colonists near present-day Clearwater Beach on the Indian River Estuary. At that time there were no real defenses against Seminole Indians* who had long inhabited this area; however Spain did build forts at both the mouth of the Kissimmee River (in what is now Ft Myers) and at Escambia Bay in 1823 to protect its interests in central Florida from Seminole encroachment.* In 1861, following Confederate victory over Union forces at Battle of Baxendale, Fort Pierce became an important Confederate supply stop on the Mobile & Pensacola Railroad* which linked Mobile with Jacksonville and allowed Confederate generals to move supplies south unimpeded*. After Union General George Meade's Invasion of South Carolina in 1865*, Fort Pierce again came into play as a supply point for southern troops fighting in that campaign* (*See “Fort Payne: History”). In 1892, following passage through Lee County by means of a canal through Clearwater Harbor*, downtown Fort Pierce began to grow rapidly as people moved into new houses built on land owned by Colonel John Hays * (see history article below). By 1910, almost one-third of all residents lived within 1 mile (2 km)of downtown *. In 1923 – just before World War II started – local businessmen organized plans for a new military base adjacent to town which would become Palm Beach Air Force Base(*See “Palm Beach AFB”). When war began†† *the mayor called City Council meeting immediately so that citizens could discuss possible security measures such as hiring more police officers *) Mayor Tom Foley ordered all businesses closed except those essential for war production†† *. On December 8th 1942 – less than two weeks after Pearl Harbor** (*See “The Pearl Harbor Attack”*) – Japanese planes bombed downtown resulting in extensive damage including loss of life and property colloquially called "The Day Of The Cat"*. More than $1 million was spent repairing streetlights; many old buildings were gutted or destroyed during this time period because they were used as munitions storage or garages for warplanes***** (*See alsohistory article below about post-war growth). All commercial properties within one block north or east of Main Street closed Dec 8 '42 due to air attack; this included most stores within 1 block north or east side only!
