Fort Pierce, Florida is a town in Martin County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,829 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville–Hollywood–Orlando Metropolitan Statistical Area. Fort Pierce was founded on August 24, 1821 by Major George Rogers Clark as a post on the west coast of Lake Okeechobee. The area now known as Fort Pierce was first inhabited by Apalachee Indians and their descendants as early as 1795 when explorer Hernando de Soto passed through this region while exploring the Indian River Valley. A small fort was built here in 1821 by Major George Rogers Clark and named for him after his victory over Spanish forces at the Battle of Buena Vista on January 7, 1823. The fort served primarily as a trading post until it was abandoned in 1830 due to Seminole Wars hostilities against Spain and its American enemy, America. Florida's first white settler arrived in what is now Fort Pierce in 1835 with Captain John Fenton who established a ferry service from Stonington to Port Jefferson then upriver to fort Pierce which he called "Fenton's Ferry Landing." He also erected a small blockhouse and store building near present day Pioneer Park.. The Post Office at Fort Pierce opened on November 15th, 1840 under Commissioners James Gadsden and Alfred Pemberton. The town site was surveyed by Lieutenant Colonel Josiah Gregg and developed by local investors under General David Dixon Moultrie into an all-black community called African settlement of today's Fort Pierce Harbor where natives were brought ashore for labor purposes such as construction projects during the initial years of development hereabouts; however these activities petered out about 1850 or so following assimilation efforts among various races within Florida... In 1860 Abraham Lincoln visited this area while campaigning for President via train from Mobile Bayou.. In 1861 Confederate troops burned down Union stores at Post Coitos Station along US 9 north of today's town limits while retreating from Gainesville towards Tallahassee; Union troops responded with artillery fire which destroyed most or all of Confederate defensive positions including Post Coitos Station resulting in large numbers dead & wounded both sides; this event helped lead to more severe fighting between Federals & Confederates later that year around Tallahassee..... After Reconstruction ended Ulysses S Grant ordered military occupation of all southern states starting February 14 1865 only to be forced out three days later when General Robert E Lee took command...... Due to increased competition from Tampa Bay Naval Base (now Clearwater) several mills closed around 1870s with resultant loss of jobs impacts throughout northwest Florida.... Starting in 1901 local shipbuilder JSA Lines initiated significant economic growth by constructing/launching many large commercial vessels both upstream/downstream (Cape Canaveral) plus numerous pleasureboats transportation services inland/outward....... However much political instability followed ensuing World War I caused many plant closings....... By 1930 JSA had merged with other companies creating Steamship Corporation renamed Johnson Metals Company......... Also during that time major floods hit Ft Pierce killing many people along Withst catastrophic winds damaging hundreds homes......... As result company president W C Johnson committed suicide........... Today much heavy maintenance takes place onboard ships providing reliable transportation link throughout northeast FLxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
