Military gift history in Fort Pierce, Florida goes back to before the United States even entered World War II. In 1917, Major General John J. Pershing created the First Infantry Division at Fort Pierce as part of the war effort. The Division was made up of soldiers from various states and territories who were recruited together to fight in Europe. The Division's first commander was Colonel Edward M. House. He was followed by Lieutenant Colonel Harry S. Truman in 1918 and Colonel John Fenton in 1919. From 1921-1924, Rear Admiral James Wulf served as Commanding Officer of the First Infantry Division until he retired due to health problems. From 1925-1929, Captain Arthur Gannon heads up the Army's War Department stores branch which functioned as a military post office for troops stationed at Fort Pierce and other installations around Miami-Dade County. The store became known as Gannon's Post during this time period because Captain Arthur Gannon ran it personally. In 1934, Army General George Custer arrived at Fort Pierce and took up permanent residence there after his discharge from the United States Cavalry Regiment headquartered at Ft Worth, Texas. After serving with distinction in World War I and II, Custer was given command of 7th Cavalry Regiment based at Ft Polk Louisiana when it was activated on May 26, 1940 effective July 1st 1939 under Second Lieutenant Franklin Biddle Carter Jr.. On October 10th 1941 Majestic Theater (now Walt Disney Concert Hall) opened its doors with an attack by Japanese aircraft on Pearl Harbor resulting in death of over 200 Americans including both commanding officers USS Enterprise (CVN 65)and USS Arizona (AO 39). Custer attended ceremonies Opening Ceremony along with members of his regiment Commander 2nd Lt Franklin Biddle Carter Jr..( later Temple University Professor Emeritus) This event is also historically significant as it marked end of hostilities between US forces stationed on Oahu Island following Japanese Attack on December 8th 1941 known as Battle off Kwajalein Atoll Incident which resulted in Japan ceded possession of that island to USMC under terms of Treaty Of Paris After World War II ended General MacArthur directed 4th Infantry Brigade Group Floridians operating out of Jacksonville area untilactivated on September 15 1947 3rd Battalion Knights Templars Sergeants Dick Mills & Dave Cullen unit has since become defunct no record exist

In 1892, the Fort Pierce Municipal Court established a military hospital in the fort. The first patients were sent to the hospital on September 12th of that year. It was not until 1916 that an ambulance service was put into operation and by 1922, the hospital had its own medical unit. In 1945, the fort was decommissioned and the military hospital closed down. The hospital property was sold to the city of Fort Pierce in 1948 and it is now used as a public library.

Fort Pierce was a small, strategic fortification established on the southwest coast of Florida in 1815 by United States Marines under the command of Rear Admiral David Montgomery. It became an important naval post during the Spanish–American War and was also used as a prison, until it was decommissioned in 1901. Fort Pierce is now a park with exhibits about its history. The fortifications were destroyed by fire in 1902 and 1904; however, they remain visible from the shoreline to this day. The first permanent settlers in what is now Fort Pierce came from England in 1814 when Captain John Smith conducted an exploration of the area that led him to establish a trading post at Stonington onancock Island. In 1818, Captain Manuel Castillo de la Torre founded Tampa Bay on Long Key Peninsula. When Florida become part of the United States following its cession from Spain in 1821, José María Escobar decided to set up shop among Seminole Indians near what is now Jacksonville. He named his new settlement after Commodore David Montgomery who had distinguished himself during the Mexican-American War and subsequent campaigns against Mexico afloat aboard USS Constitution (C-8). In 1825, Commodore John C. Perry arrived at Pensacola with USS Perry (AO-5) seeking entrance into Cuba through blockadeading action off Havana harbor but found no interference by Spanish authorities permitting him passage thenceforth as he should have done pursuant to U.S.–Spanish Neutrality Laws of 1850 which prohibited military intercourse between American belligerents without prior notification to both nations’ respective ambassador or minister concerned excepting cases where absolute necessity required it for self-defense or defense of vital interests within their own territory or possessions; accordingly Perry disembarked his vessel at Santiago de Cuba whereupon Ensign James Hickey landed troops comprising two companies under Major George Armstrong Custer with orders not onlyto expel all Cubans but also storm and burn all public buildings including churches which had been built without governmental sanction….. It soon became apparent that there would be no attempt by either side to allow such an open conflict inside Cuban soil so Commodore Montgomerys convinced Governor Juan Ponce de León – then residing near Havana –that Fort Pierce must be established adjacent thereto “in order that those who may wish to come hither might do so unarmed and without molestation”………. A garrison of three hundred marines was eventually organized at Fort Pierce under Commandant Moses Brownell with instructions to protect This port against any possible pirates or smugglers…..In 1860 when Florida gained statehood, Fort Pierce occupied much diminished significance as it lay mere miles inland along US Highway 1A from Indian River Lagoon complex on Gulf Side extending out into Indian River Sound across mouth estuary….
