Fort Pierce was a military post on the Florida Keys. It was established in 1821 by United States forces during the Seminole War. The fort served as a base of operations for American troops and as an important staging area for naval operations against the Seminoles. The fort was abandoned in 1845 and destroyed by Seminole Indian raiders. The site is now used as a park.
Fort Pierce was founded by the Spanish in 1565 as a trading post on the east coast of Florida. The first European to see and visit Fort Pierce was Don Diego de Quiros, who explored the south coast of Florida in 1565-66. The fort was also used as a prison from 1612 to 1627. In 1795, during the Mexican-American War, Fort Pierce became part of Mexico and it remained under Mexican control until 1821 when it reverted back to British control. In 1824, Ft. Pierce became an important military outpost when Seminole Indians began raids into nearby counties. The British built a stockaded fort at Fort Pierce in 1825 and garrisoned it with about 100 soldiers and sailors under Captain Charles Richardson. From this base, Richardson conducted successful attacks against the Seminoles for six years (1825-30). After Richardson's death in 1830, his replacement Captain John Drake organized operations against the Seminoles until his own death in 1835. During American Indian Removal Act of 1840, Ft. Pierce became part of what is now Polk County, Florida. In 1861, during the American Civil War, Confederate forces attacked Fort Pierce while Union troops were besieging Jacksonville newspaper editor Robert Ewell Blackwell Sr.'s home; Blackwell was taken prisoner and later executed at Fort Butler near Tampa Bay without trial or public scrutiny due to lack of legal authority over such matters at that time. The fort was abandoned after the war ended but portions still stand today including: Battery #1 on US 1A just north of town; Battery #2 on US 1A just west of town; Battery #3 on US 2 near mile marker 5; Platform #4 next to Water Tower which served as barracks for munitions storage between 1912 and 1945; Post Office Building (now University Center) which housed various government services from 1912 through 1956 and Federal Courthouse Annex which houses courtrooms currently located inside Southern Methodist Univ.-Mayo Campus entrance building
