The Fort Pierce Police Department is one of the oldest and most decorated law enforcement agencies in Florida. The department was formed on December 12, 1903 and has served the community for over 100 years. The department's history can be traced back to when Sheriff Willard W. Grooms organized a group of men to patrol the community. Today, the Fort Pierce Police Department employs over 350 officers and employees who work hard every day to keep our community safe. One of the department's earliest accomplishments was their incorporation into co-operation with other departments in 1923. At that time, the fort Pierce Police Department had only two officers and they worked together to provide service within the town limits. In 1933, Officer Harry Jahnke was appointed as first Sergeant of Ft Pierce PD and he led this team until his retirement in 1967. Sgt Jahnke is considered by many as one of the early pioneers of today’s police force in Fort Pierce. Throughout its history, Ft Petersburg PD has always been committed to providing quality policing services for its residents and businesses. In 1984, during difficult times for law enforcement in South Florida due to budget cuts, Mayor Tom Foley placed an order for 1,000 new patrol cars which would later become known as "Foley Cars". This purchase helped support future programs such as Traffic Enforcement Unit (TEU) which ceased operations after only one year because so many officers were transferred away from TEU due to retirements or transfers out of state duties related to 9/11/2001 attacks on New York City

Fort Pierce is a census-designated place (CDP) in Martin County, Florida, United States. The population was 2,664 at the 2010 census. Fort Pierce is located on the southern coast of Lake Okeechobee and is part of the Miami–Dade metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Fort Pierce were French traders in 1695. They named it "Pinecrest" after their settlement on Pine Island off the coast of Miami. With British assistance in 1763, Indian raids minimized and English settlements grew along both coasts of South Florida until 1821 when Spanish explorer Manuel Floridablanca mapped and named the present-day area including Fort Pierce after his friend Lieutenant José de la Luz y Sanz de Ayala. In 1827, Captain John Horry founded Horry's Landing on Captiva Inlet as a stopover for goods travelling between Stonington, Connecticut and Havana, Cuba. By 1840 there were over 100 residents living at Horry's Landing with growing trade with the international slave market during Reconstruction period in America In 1861 Confederate forces invaded Florida under General Robert Ewell who captured Pensacola before reaching Jacksonville but did not attack Jacksonville which he believed would be surrendered without resistance given its strategic importance within Confederate control lines. On May 10th 1861 Jacksonville was sacked by Union troops commanded by Major General Winfield Scott Key who ordered artillery fire that destroyed almost all buildings within minutes leaving Tensley Hall as only one building standing which served as an observation post to provide cover for other soldiers moving into downtown Jacksonville which they burned subsequent day . An act passed by Congress on December 12th 1861 authorized Fort Pierce to be built across from Mobile Bay to protect Yacht Harbor from possible Cuban raiders while also providing naval gunfire support against CSS Alabama if needed during Siege of Mobile . The fort was completed in 1866 and became known as "Fort Pierce Naval Station". A new hospital was erected at this site in 1868 called Naval Hospital #1 followed by Naval Hospital #2 in 1893; later renamed Marine Corps Memorial Hospital following World War II renaming changes related to military service members buried there including Medal of Honor recipients Harry Elmer Barnes (1915 -1998), Chester Nimitz (1925 -2006), James Mosely (1920 -2008) A State Capitol Annexation Act finally gave statehood to Florida on November 14th 1907 due to overwhelming popular vote with only 1 percent minority representation although blacks made up 8 percent of total population according to US Census data published that year . At this time there were 9 counties located within Martin County making it difficult for a single government agency or office such as sheriff or fire department etc.. In 1933 additional Martin County jurisdictions were annexed creatingernandina Beach – Cutler Heights – Doral – Stuart – Temple Terrace – Vero Beach – Port Everglades National Park becoming unincorporated territory much like Seminole County adjacent Tampa had been done earlier that same year . For more than 50 years FtPierce has been governed through local agencies/officials rather than having a statewide governing body similar to those found neighboring Hillsborough county where services are provided primarily through county commissioners
