In 1886, Captain John Sledge founded Jacksonville's first ferry service to reach Fort Walton Beach from Jacksonville Sound on Jupiter Inlet. Foley built a new pier along present day NW 7th Street which allowed ships larger than 25 feet (6 m) to dock at Fort Walton Beach instead of having to enter through the narrow entrance near downtown Jacksonville. This made Fort Walton Beach one of the most popular tourist destinations in America during that time period because it offered more choices for visitors than Jacksonville did for sailors seeking passage to Tampa or St Petersburg
