The Fort Walton Beach Coast Guard has been providing safety and security on the beach for more than 100 years. The service is made up of a group of professional officers, firefighters, paramedics and coast guard dogs who work together to provide a safe environment for residents and visitors. One of the first things the Coast Guard did when they arrived in Fort Walton Beach was to set up a hydrant to keep people from getting sick while swimming. This was also one of the first times they ever had equipment to help with law enforcement tasks such as search and rescue. In 1916, the Coast Guard started using lifejackets as part of their uniform. In 1912, Coast Guard detachments were stationed at both Miami and Fort Lauderdale. In 1944, the first station on Key West Island was established and in 1959, a detachment was stationed in Pensacola.

Fort Walton Beach is a city in the state of Florida, United States. The population was 21,389 at the 2010 census. Fort Walton Beach is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Sanford metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1892 by Oleander Wilkinson and named for General James Wilkinson, who had helped to purchase land for the fort. Construction began on the fort in 1895 and was completed in 1897. As part of World War II, both Fort Walton Beach and nearby Miramar were heavily bombed by Japan as part of its strategy to starve Germany into surrender. As a result of its bombing raids, Fort Walton Beach became one of only a few U.S cities to be designated a "ghost town." The city's nickname comes from its location on an estuary that forms between two peninsulas: One rises about 20 feet (6 m) above the other and runs alongshore for about 0.5 mile (0.8 km). This natural feature made it difficult for any ship larger than a schooner to enter or leave; hence, "Fort Walton Beach" came to be known as an anchorage where small boats could dock while large ships waited their turn to berth or anchor off shore. As late as 1913, officials estimated that no more than 500 people lived within reach of Miramar without passing through Fort Walton Beach A steel mill built in 1926 produced military vehicles such as tanks and jeeps during World War II but closed after the war due to low sales rates It reopened briefly as an auto parts store before closing again In 1990 it reopened as JB Weld Incorporated with 5 acres undeveloped

The town grew up around the fort, and soon became an important center for trade and culture in the area. In 1825, the fort was abandoned after being destroyed by a storm. However, Fort Walton Beach continued to be an important site for military purposes until it was decommissioned in 1907. After its closure, Fort Walton Beach slowly declined over time due to changes in technology and population growth outside of the town itself. However, since it reopened as a cultural destination in 2006, Fort Walton Beach has begun to rebound as a popular tourist destination.
