Fort Walton Beach is a town in Bay County, Florida, United States. The population was 2,521 at the 2010 census. The town is part of the Pensacola metropolitan area. Fort Walton Beach is located on the western coast ofBay County and extends into Escambia County to the south. The original name for Fort Walton Beach was "Keelborough". It was renamed for Major General George Keeler (1814-1887) who during his command of Union troops at Key West in 1861 led an attack against Confederate forces under General Pee Dee Jones. Keeler's force destroyed two Confederate batteries at Keelborough Point before becoming outnumbered and retreating back to Spanish Fort. The fortification known today as "Fort Walton" was built by Captain John Clothier in 1845 to protect settlers traveling between Saint Augustine and Pensacola on horseback or via boat from Seminole Indians operating in the area. The first white settler in what would become Fort Walton Beach was Andrew Gregg who arrived with his family in 1836. He set up a trading post near present day Evergreen Boulevard and Lighthouse Road which he named Inverness after his daughter Inverness Gregg McCloskey who married Drury Gillespie of Mobile, Alabama . After three years, Gregg moved his business ashore due to Indian attacks and abandoned it when hostilities ended in 1840. A group of Englishmen including Captains John Davenport (1793-1847) and James Cook (1779-1857), landed at Palatka Island about four miles northeast of Inverness on December 12, 1841 while exploring nearby Stonington Island for possible passage to Cuba Libre through central Florida . They were met by local chief Osceola who escorted them ashore and directed them towards stores at Inverness Landing where they spent Christmas that year before starting their journey back home on January 7th 42 next door at Tampa Bay . In 1946 construction began on what would become known as "Fort Walton Beach State Park" which encompassed most of what is now Fort Walton Beach Town limits northward to MLK Boulevard/State Road 922 eastward to US Highway 98 within city limits southward along SR 922 from NW 10th Avenue/SR 924 all the way down MLK Boulevard until it crossed over US Highway 98 just east of downtown’s SW corner near DeSoto Street . At its opening approximately 3 million people visited this new state park with 1 million more visiting annually since its creation On December 11, 1948 President Harry Truman signed Executive Order 13434 creating space within FtWashboro beach state park for the storageof military supplies used in Korea In 1955 Congress passed Publius Law #10 5202 creating Turnagain Lake Recreation Area adjacent thereto bounded by SR 922 WSW & Gulfstream Drive NE & I-95E ENE & access road leading thereto from Gulfstream DriveNW ....... The town flourished during the early days of Tampa Bay’s development, thanks to its position as a commercial and military center for Southwest Florida. However, when Tampa Bay began to grow rapidly in popularity, Fort Walton Beach slowly lost its status as a major port and today it is one of the smaller communities located in Hillsborough County. The first occupants of what is nowFort Walton Beach were Native Americans who inhabited what is now Port St Lucie and Bradenton prior to European arrival. It is believed that these Indians hunted small game such as rabbits and squirrels while fishing from tidal flats along the bluffs overlooking Tampa Bay. By 1800, white Euro-Americans had settled along Clearwater River which border present day Ft Walton Beach on the east side while Englishman built houses along today's Causeway Boulevard on the west side of Ft Walton Beach Harbor securing their land through treaties with local Seminole Indians who resided there at that time. As Europeans arrived more numerous and began farming areas adjacent to reefs (today's bay), salt water intrusion resulted in increased flooding which exposed mangroves at high tide making hunting difficult so all but two families moved inland before 1840 when dredging commenced which exposed rich phosphate resources around present day Gulfport where phosphate mills were established beginning in 1860-. By 1870 most residents within current boundaries of Ft Walton beach had left for various reasons including phosphate production shutters down; however some continued ashore till date including C & W Gibbs grocery store opened on Bush Street 1918…Some artifacts from this time include Bronze Age human remains discovered near present day intersection of US 1A & State Road 710E; ironclad USS Constitution Museum Key West facility closed circa 1930; batteriesite (Battalion #1) battery (N/A)…. Today many aspects unique to Ft Walton beach history remain such as its original 10-acre sandbar known only to those privileged enough or brave enough venture out onto it each spring when waves crash over shoreline creating white sandy15 feet deep with black seagulls nesting atop brown sugar cane bushes then soaring off into clear blue sky providing dramatic views across lower bay towards Naples…..
