The Fort Walton Beach Coffee Company was founded in 1916 by Mr. and Mrs. Harry R. Koval and Mr. Samuel Liddle. The company grew slowly at first, but it increased production after World War I when the government started importing coffee from Europe for military use. After Prohibition ended in 1933, the company became a major producer of espresso andAmericano coffee beans in Florida. The business expanded rapidly during the Great Depression, and Mr. Koval sold his share in the company to his son-in-law, Harry Atherton, in 1938. In 1941, the company changed its name to The Ritz Coffee Company Incorporated (later renamed Fort Walton Beach Coffee Co.). During World War II, Fort Walton Beach Coffee Company produced analgesic drugs for military personnel as part of their war effort efforts; these products were distributed throughout the United States. Following the war, the company increased production again and began selling roasts of whole bean coffee concentrate as well as ground coffee beans to consumers throughout Florida and into other states such as Alabama and Georgia. In 1970, The Ritz Coffee Company merged with Allied Can Corporation to form Allied Can/Fort Walton Beach Coffee Co., which continued to operate until 1984 when it was bought by Keurig Green Mountain Corporation; today's Fort Walton Beach Coffee is still operated by Keurig GmbH & Co., Ltd..
Fort Walton Beach, Florida is a census-designated place in Leon County, Florida, United States. The population was 5,554 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Sanford Metropolitan Statistical Area. Fort Walton Beach's history dates back to 1892 when General James Wilkinson built a garrison here to secure Pensacola Bay against Spanish pirate activity. The town now known as Fort Walton Beach was founded in 1902 by businessmen and military veterans who were moving from Jacksonville to escape the humidity and mosquitoes of Jacksonville. The first post office in Fort Walton Beach was established on July 1, 1902. In 1934, the name of the town changed to Fort Walton Beach after General Quarters had been cancelled due to World War II and its effects on the local economy; prior to that it had been called Jacksonville. For many years there was no school in Fort Walton Beach; students instead went to Jacksonville or nearby points such as Stonington or Live Oak for instruction until 1928 when Congress passed an act establishing a public school system for Seminole County and providing funds for construction of a school at Fort Walton Beach which opened in 1929. On January 15, 1959 local resident Leroy Caldwell filed with the Florida State Board of Education an application for recognition as a municipal government under state law No 82-832 which would have allowed him direct control over expenditures within his municipality plus certain powers not possessed by other municipalities within Seminole County including taxation, fire protection and planning responsibilities combined with exclusive right to borrow money up to $2 million without collateral security. On March 15th 1959 he received written notification from State Superintendent John Burden that his application had been accepted and incorporation into our municipality would be effective on April 1st 1959 under title 8-A Sec 2(a) of Laws OfFlorida Annotated . It is the county seat of Walton County and part of the Tallahassee-West Tallahassee Metropolitan Statistical Area. The beach town began as a small farming community on the mouth of the Stono River in 1865 and grew rapidly with the arrival of railroad settlers in 1887. Fort Walton Beach became an important seaport for Alabama cotton traders during Reconstruction, and its economy depended heavily on fishing, tourism, and agriculture until after World War II when defense spending replaced those sectors as Fort Walton Beach's mainstay. The post office at Fort Walton Beach was established in 1887 and remained open until it was closed by USPS in 1960. At that time it was one of only two US post offices still open as a result of American Civil War activity withinFlorida; the other being Jacksonville. In 1961, Congress passed legislation annexing much of Florida to the Confederacy following heated debate over Ulysses S Grant's decision to pardon General Robert E Lee after his surrender at Appomattox Court House. As part of this process, parts including present-day Fort Walton Beach were added to Indian Territory under act 202 of 1862 which ceded what is now Florida to America via Indian removal efforts undertaken by US authorities beginning in 1663.
