The M1 Carbine remained in use by Spanish troops until 1958 when it was replaced by an improved version called the P08 Pistol. Fort Walton Beach is a city in Florida, United States. The population was 9,953 at the 2010 census. Fort Walton Beach is part of the Sarasota-Bradenton metropolitan area. The first people to live here were the Timucua and Apalachee who built their villages on the beachfront in what is now Fort Walton Beach. Over time, other Native American groups such as the Seminoles and Choctaws also settled in this area. In 1821, Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de León discovered an island off shore with some white men living on it, and he named it San Marcos after himself. In 1831, U.S. Navy Commodore James Buchanan decided to build a small fort on the island for defense against Seminole attacks from inland. At first, only soldiers lived here; later civilians also came to live here for various reasons including safety and trade opportunities with Spain which had been lost in Cuba during the Mexican–American War (1846-1848). The town was officially founded on May 15th of that year when Major General James Wofford laid down plans for its erection on land donated by Captain John Sellers of Pensacola Bayou Company which then ran through what are now downtown Fort Walton Beach and North Port along bayou Santa Rosa until it connected with Pensacola Bayou just outside present day Foley Square shopping center before terminating near Gulf Shores Boulevard across from Sarasota County Government Center today's USS Constitution Museum complex tomorrow’s Armistice Monument/ Battle Ground National Monument all within today’s town limits Historical marker: On November 3rd 1903 - due to concerns about possible Alaskan Lighthouse shipwrecks - President Grover Cleveland ordered Congress to appropriate $10,000 towards building a lighthouse at Point Lookout State Park adjacent to modern day Fort Walton Beach where today's lighthouse stands abandoned but still visible from Ft Walton Beach Harbor Today's City Limits: Ft Walton Beach & North Port In 1933 - post World War II - much like most other places in Florida during that time annexed by new municipalities due to development pressures following war - Ft Walton Beach became an unincorporated community inside Indian River County line
