The Fort Walton Beach National Guard was formed on November 12, 1940. The purpose of the guard was to provide security for military installations and to provide law enforcement services within the city limits of Fort Walton Beach. The first unit to be activated was Company I, which consisted of 25 soldiers. By 1942, Company I had grown to over 100 Soldiers and six Officers. In 1941, the Miami-Dade County Sheriff’s Office moved into the old United States Naval Air Station at Fort Walton Beach and needed a police department as well. A bill was passed in Congress that created a national guard department with jurisdiction over all county sheriff’s departments in Florida. On December 1st, 1941, Company II (now Company G) was activated and consisted of 45 soldiers from Miami-Dade County. On May 8th 1944, Headquarters Battery C of the 273rd Infantry Regiment reactivated at Ft Walton Beach after being mobilized for World War II in Europe. The battery became part of Ninth Army when it arrived in England on September 3rd 1944 and fought its way back across France before returning home on October 15th 1944 via Belgium and Holland to Sterling Heights, Michigan where it relieved batteries 2nd Battalion Indiana National Guardsmen killed or missing in action during World War II (BIG DOG). Company H was activated on November 9th 1948 at Ft Walton Beach after being mobilized for Korean War service as part of First Brigade Combat Team VII/First Cavalry Division (5th Cavalry Regimental Combat Team). Upon its activation companies were equipped with M1 Garand rifles while their Officers received new Police Officer uniforms designed by Colonel Edward Rickenbacker who later served as Commanding General Marine Corps Reserve Force Commandant at Camp Pendleton during the Vietnam War era until his retirement in 1984.

In 1965 USFV3 marine patrol boat #2 sank while hunting dolphins about 2 miles from shore after becoming lost in deep water; all three officers aboard survived but one swimmer remained missing for over 10 days before being found dead with no sign of him or her; this event marked the end of USFV3's coastal patrolling operations on Fort Walton Beach. In 1974 FWC began stocking white-tipped eels along beaches throughout the Gulf River System as part of their effort to reduce fisherman’s catches; this program ended in 1984 when federal funding for eel stocking expired without any replacement plan put forth.
