On November 3rd 1840 Jacksonville voters approved an ordinance which divided Duval County into five parishes each headed by a parish priest elected by laymen… Gainsville would become part of Plantation Parish . On December 11th 1860 Hurricane Earl struck Florida causing extensive damage including major flooding throughout most parts of duval county destroying homes and businesses.. Most people lost their homes but fortunately many people managed to gather all their belongings and move out before too much damage could be done especially since gainesville had been built close enough to provide food for everyone affected .. due mostly to this hurricanegainesville has seen very little real estate development over time
