The Gainesville Air Force Base was founded in 1945 as a World War II airbase. The base served as an important station during the Cold War, playing a role in AAF operations against Warsaw Pact nations and Soviet Union. In 1992, the base was transferred to the Florida Army National Guard and became part of the Florida Air National Guard. The Air Force Museum opened on the base in 2002 and is now open to the general public. The museum has artifacts from both American and RAF aircraft dating back to World War II. In 2006, it was announced that the Air Force would be selling its historic Quinjet aircraft at auction. The planes had been stored at the Base since 1997 when they were taken off lease by then-Air Force Chief of Staff General Rick Hagee for use as exhibit vehicles at Middle Tennessee State University's Aviation Research Center (ARFC). When it was announced that these planes would be sold, much media attention focused on Gainesville because of its close proximity to Washington D.C., home of many USAF museums including Wright-Patterson AFB and AFSC(now Wright-Patterson AFB grounds), which are also involved with this sale process. The Quinjet aircraft were first designed by Lockheed Martin Aircraft Corporation in 1984 while they were still under development for the United States Military Jet engine consortium project known as 'XX'. These engines were originally going to power large military transports such as C-130 Hercules transport planes but eventually found use powering fighter jets such as Alenia Aermacchi Marchetti SF2 Sabres operated by Italian Fighter squadrons during NATO's Campaigns in Yugoslavia and Afghanistan during Operation Allied Shield/Operation Enduring Freedom from 2001 - 2003 . Aftermarket sales began shortly after their arrival on UU soil with numerous modifications being made to various models including conversion kits for personal transportation or construction projects using them for purposes other than flying; some have even been converted into hotel pods or used for car showrooms across America . Many have even been leased out commercially or displayed at conventions across North America . Unfortunately, due to economic conditions following 9/11 attacks many owners either ceased flying or only flew low level instrument flights without any sort of registration; this lack of documentation has left many questions unanswered about these obsolete airplanes . It should be noted that not all former USAF pilots turned air traffic controllers; quite a few actually retired before their retirement age!
